Is insulation necessary as a rule on boilers in G1 locos?
Project book suggests "...lagged with cork sheet or fibreglass. The cleading sheet is cut from thin sheet brass - 26 s.w.g being about right."
If some form of insulation is indeed advisable, any suggestions for readily available material for the insulation? Should I perhaps make and use strips of wood?
Hoping seasoned hands can help guide me please.... ;D

Hi alasdairm How's the G1 going then. I have been contemplating unwrapping my G1' ( Green Arrow) but its still to early and having spent hours with the emery paper getting a high quality finish I don't want to see it become rusty. I didn't do any for my loco but then I haven't really finished it yet. I don't intend to put any on my G1 project as it was my first dabs at building a loco, and most of my efforts are now going into my G1 Green Arrow modeleng.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=GA1general&action=display&thread=2890 now things are settling down here a bit I am managing to get out to the workshop a bit more so I may start to tackle a few bits on the loco. Hi Steve, Thanks for the reply. I'm still working on the Gauge 1 and really enjoying it. Loads of "practice pieces" being produced but it is teaching me a huge amount. If the saying about learning a lot from ones own mistakes is true then I will surely end up extremely knowledgeable.... ;D Taking my time - I find that I pop into the workshop for a few minutes before going to bed and next thing I know it is way past midnight.... I look forward to future progess reports on your Project (if you do any more on it) and Green Arrow - which I have to say looks really nice. Shiny sparkling frames - and I may well pinch your idea of the building jig/chassis holder  Regards, Alasdair |

That's funny, reminds me of myself awhile back. Wife knocks on window asking if I want a coffee before she hits the sack that was 10.00pm, I decide to finish of milling the cylinders and then boring them out. That'll do I thought looking at my watch twenty past 3 in the morning. ;D ;D. Yes I will make a start on the G1 shortly and no doubt I will finish the Project in between jobs. I always like to keep at least 2 to 3 smaller jobs on the go, I find it useful for filling in when time when I only have the evenings to spare in the workshop.

Going back to the origina question, I think it is worth fitting lagging and cladding. Cork works well (I use carbon fibre matting because I have a supply of it) and I'd use 28swg brass or nickel silver for the cladding with 1/16 x 1/164 brass strip for the boiler bands, held togeth with little bits of brass angle soldered on to the ends under the boiler and pulled together with 10ba screws and nuts.

Teakfreak - thanks for the input. I got some cork sheet but found it was too thick (I got 3mm and perhaps should have got 1 or 2mm).
So have now been given some nice thin ceramic fibre lagging that I can probably use wrapped round the boiler twice. Have also got some 26swg brass sheet that I will be using.
And ta for the idea on using a small piece of brass angle on the bands.
