Early trial fitting of the cab of Robert Burns also trial load of a photo. Taken back in June 2010. I have just noticed that the tender still had the hand rails on the front and they have been sent to the scrap bin a long time ago! It all looks to fit ok, until you notice the gap in the cab roof Attachments:

More shots of the cab from August 2011 It was around this time that I realised that the rear frames had dropped and as you can see the cab front pointed skyward Attachments:

Very nice Andrew very nice indeed, you should be very happy with that level of detail I reckon The photos are also a rather sharp reminder of how much more I have to do on Boadicea.

Thanks Jim. a shot from about a fortnight ago of the driver's side injector and its water valve. It will be interesting to see how the valve performs, It my own design and will be worked via a lever and crank system from the fireman's side Ala prototype. Attachments:

The work on the smoke deflector has taken nearly all of yesterday This was the first of the Diane Carney plates I have cut. Man is the brass hard! I managed to snap three piercing saw blades just cutting three sides. My first thought when I placed the name on the deflector was she had given me ones for a 7 1/4 engine, but a quick look in the Bradford Barton confirmed things are OK. I have very few close up shots of Robert Burns, fortunately one is of the smoke box. Attachments:

And a shot of the back. Spot the mistake The extra lamp irons were only fitted to the engines on the Southern as far as I can see. At least not to the Eastern engines. So that will have to go. Attachments:

Thanks Ian Still a long way to go. I have had mad half hour with a couple of spray cans on Friday. Getting some colour on makes such a difference. Even if it is black! Think I will run a clearence drill down the holes for the smoke deflector fixing bolts that screw into the foot plate so I can put a nut on the bottom. trying to do 10BA bolts up when you can't get your fingers on them to start the bolt in and only turn them a quarter turn with a spanner is not much fun! There is not even clearence to use a socket!! I need to add the front step. Attachments:

For the same reasons you give Andrew I paint as I go, it just brings the model to life. A very handsome model. Jim

Well has It really been since October ! My word all that time and not much to show! The Damage to the front end when it rolled in the car is repaired. I just need to repaint the smokebox. The marks in the paint aren't. you can just make out the footplate steps and I think part of the lathe!! Attachments:

I have managed to get the wash out plugs fitted and the mud hole doors. Also made up some new steps. Much better than the abominations ModelWorks ones. Attachments:

But I have used the MW front step and added a dimpled cover to the bottom one and a new middle step. Why? well they are quite venerable so the extra thickness I think will be an advantage, and they are only bolted on so I can always replace them Andrew Attachments:

Andrew Good to see your pics again, and the greater detail achievable with 5" scale! I thought about mud holes on mine, as I managed to get the washout plugs in the right number - 6 & 5 - at the third attempt, but the cladding void isn't big enough to accommodate them. Good luck! JB

Hi Andrew
It's coming along nicely! I used the Doug Hewson front steps which look nice but as you say they are quite vulnerable to damage - I've twice had to remove and straighten them. Your more solid ones should be more practical.
Regards, John

Thanks John's.
It was your comments JJ on your MW builder site that made me think that it would be a good idea.

I can't decide which looks better the pipes lagged with 5mm strips of cloth or string or neither. I know all the straggly ends are showing, I'll cut them off once I decide and they are painted. An article in the Model Railway Journal from 1988 quotes the pipes as lagged then painted green above the running boards and black below. Andrew Attachments:

Both look good, but my vote is for the cloth, Noggin
