Hello all,
We are looking at the possibility of applying for charitable status for the Stockport and District club. Are there any other clubs that operate this way, I'd very much appreciate some discussion over the pro's and con's?
Regards,
Waggy.

Hi Waggy, The Ickenham considered this some time ago. A I recall the advice against charitable status was that the club's assets effectively become owned by the Charity Commissioners. All significant disposal of assets has to be approved by them. There was also a feeling that reporting was more rigid, but this should not be a major issue once you've done the first couple of years. Going away from charitable status could also be difficult should there be a change of heart in the future. On the other hand I once belonged to a non-ME society that was a charity and when we got the VAT cheques it always felt like we'd got a bonus. My main recommendation would be to get legal advice on what you are planning. In the end we became a company limited by guarantee as that satisfied our requirements best (protecting members from the actions of others). We've been happily operating like that ever since. Good luck John

Waggy, you do not say why you want to be a charity. Discussions before may be relevant here and here.

There was a detailed article in Model Engineer when Chichester club changed its status. It goes into the options and the reasons they made their choice.
Dont have the issue No, but I am sure someone will have.

Hello all,
Many thanks again for the replies and information.
S&DSME is already a limited company, has been for a number of years.
A friendly society could be an option, personally I'd rather leave things alone and pay the tax!
Regards to all,
Waggy.

Waggy, I know that Bristol and Cardiff societies have Charitable Status and we at Oxford are looking into it now. There are some scare stories about it but it much depends on your articles of association now as to if there are many changes to make. If you need any help please contact our secretary vis our website, www.cosme.org.ukDenis Mulford Chairman City of Oxford S.M.E
