Hi Don,
It wasn't until I played the video that I noticed the weight shaft arm bobbing up and down as you point out. I was a bit mystified by it as a recheck of a much earlier video of the engine running on air shows the arm to be quite steady.
The cause seems to be the bolts coming loose on the bearing for the expansion link's trunnions, in the video you can see the bearing moving quite noticeably. I've now gone round and fixed both bearings securely but will now have to wait until I can steam up again to see if that was the cause.
I don't have the oil damper you mention but I did fit the restoring spring. Interestingly as drawn by JP the spring wouldn't work as intended due to the end of the spring arm being fixed to the lifting arm and so unable to follow the rotation of lifting arm on the weight shaft. To overcome this I attached the end of spring arm so it could slide between two 'fingers' as the shaft rotated. I'm not sure it actually does anything and as you say the model doesn't really need it but it does looks the part.
Thanks again Don.
Jim.

I'm glad you found the thread useful, it's a great hobby and for me a lot of fun. A 3 1/2" Britannia would be a lovely model and more easily managed and capable of quite hard work. I look forward to following your thread along with Simplyloco, he's made a solemn promise to restart work on his lovely 3 1/2" Britannia too.

If you break that promise John I'll put an ancient Australian curse on you. It goes along the lines of 'May all your chickens turn into Emus and kick your Dunny down' Jim

It goes along the lines of 'May all your chickens turn into Emus and kick your Dunny down' Jim I haven't got any choice: David (Midland) lives down the road and he will make sure that I keep my promises! This year there is no new kitchen to fit, no doors to replace, the garden is all artificial grass, the motor home and 911 are both sold, so no distractions or excuses! I'm quite looking forward to it. John

Fantastic achievement Jim, you must be stoked! (pun intended) to see it come alive under its own steam must have been spine tingling and so satisfying !
Inspiration for me, as well as every other model builder I would expect.

Thanks Jools for the kind comments. I must admit it was an exciting moment to see the loco come alive especially given I was half expecting a roar of steam up the chimney or some other problem to dampen the day, I tend to imagine the worst. The next job will be to extend the landing outside the workshop to make it a lot easier to get the Britannia out so it can be taken to the club or just to steam it up to watch the wheels go round. Jim.

Hi Brian, My apologies for that. Somehow I managed to upload the video twice, I don't use YouTube often and in trying to delete the duplicate I of course deleted the wrong one. I've now re-posted the correct link in the original post which is: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLW9P_E32a0This should work now. Sorry about that Brian. Jim

With 70036 awaiting its second steam up I decided to get cracking on the track extension that will allow me to run the loco straight out of the workshop. The extension will connect to the current track on the scissor table and when in place will mean the loco will be outside on the landing while the scissor table it normally rests on will be in the workshop but clear of the doorway. The first photo shows the track being brazed up using the oxy-propane set. Of course if you have a length of track you have to have something to run on it so I lugged the ride on car over from the workshop and had some seniors fun pushing it back and forth. A by product of all this activity was that I tidied up the shed and now you can see the floor. I know it's a shock but.... it does happen....once in a blue moon. Jim

But Jim, After all that activity........did you need a smoothing libation or two to get over it?
Cheers Kerrin.

A soothing ale Kerrin? Oh dear I am getting old, in all this excitement I'd forgotten I had them all ready to go in the fridge.
That's it folks I'm off to get some engineer's throat soothers.

Today I completed the test track and so set it all up to see how it handled the locomotive and to see if there were any unforeseen problems. Fortunately there weren't As the photos show the track extension works well and will even allow me to couple the ride on car behind the tender to get an appreciation of how it all goes together. Over the next few days I intend to do another steam up to check all is now working following some minor problems found after the first steam up. Jim
