On the thought of rust, I got some tools from an old guy who had kept them in a shed that had an old forge in it (lots of sulphur dioxide from the oxidising pyrite in the coal). They were evenly coated with powdery rust. In an attempt to stabilise their condition, I boiled them. After a quick brush, what a fantastic matt blue! it looked even better rubbed with wax oil.
The interesting thing was, some partially rusted bits, took on a slight bluing on the formerly bright patches. some sort of electrolitic effect? I don't know.
I' will be careful of chlorinated cutting fluids from now on though....

I used to have a "file card", sort of fine wire brush for getting pinning out of files. Didn't work very well though.
