Been there done that , it is not the cost ;D it is the feeling of not wasting and patience , I can't express it in one word . This is the thing that separate the people who achieve excellence and the rest of us . I am guilty of it , I am aware of but I continue to do it .

Machined the remaining 6 wheels today, as well as drilling the crank pin holes in the driving wheels. Ran into a problem on two wheel castings - blowholes? on the flange. A third wheel has what appears to be a fine crack on the tread - will I need to get a replacement for that as well? I will have to contact the guys at GLR. The wheels are not attached to the axles yet - just posed there. I will paint them before final fixing. Attachments:

A couple of the bad wheels - the wheel on the left has the hole going all of the way through, the second wheel probably only has a 0.3-0.5mm web over a couple of the holes Attachments:

As Shawki says "been there done that".
Pete and myself both purchased our castings about the same time and I had the same problem. One had a hole right through the flange.
The other Pete H at GLR replaced the full set, machined. He got the guy who did the castings to do the machining as part of the QC process.
As its 9:00am Monday morning in the UK right now no doubt you are already on the phone to him

Close Peter. I actually phoned Peter H at GLR around 7pm tonight - Midday UK. He is going to send out 3 new tender wheel castings so all good.
As usual for a Monday no shedding today - too busy doing my wife's paper work scanning but tomorrow I hope to be back into it. I have also picked the colour for my loco - Deep/mid blue. Will have to get the acetone out and start the degreaseing process soon.

Many ways of skinning a cat, but did you consider fabrication from some plate and silver soldering to create the angle. Machine to get it square, as the write up suggests,
Just a thought

Funnily enough, that thought did get processed. However it was more the case of plenty of spare metal - and I just find the machining theraputic One day, when I get a proper mill, it will get quicker. At some point I have to paint the fence posts that have been taking up part of the shed and put the new fence up. Just got to find 7 hours of fine weather to get the paint touch dry. On another point - did you prime your wheels or just go with the top coat?

Pete
I primed them because I was using a vehicle touch up rattle can. If I'd been using one of the 3M hit temp colours or something like smooth hammerite I wouldn't have bothered.
Do them before they get loctited onto the axles. mask up the hub centers, backs, treads, flanges and rims. Use the trick of trimming the edge of the tape using a file not a knife.
Primer, topcoat and leave overnight. The following night I baked them in the barbecue at about 200F, apparently that's the temp the vehicle sprayers bake their finish.
After I did mine I got hold of Martin Evans book for the Simplex. His advice was to take the un-machined blanks, fettle and degrease then dunk them into a can of paint hang up to drain and dry. Then machine them after that. Again many ways to skin a cat.
Hope that helps

Thanks Pete, I am using a hi-temp paint so probably won't bother with the primer. Just looking for a suitable glass dish to use for the Acetone (madam has told me to leave her pyrex alone ) Nothing done last night as I had to work on my car

You'll need to negotiate the oven or barbie to cure it otherwise the first hint of oil and it will just come off. Bake it and its fine.
A barbie shouldn't be a problem for you being in Oz

Hi Pete, I see you're not bothering with primer under the Hi Temp paint...wise move. I had a lot of problems with paint blistering on my Burrell's chimney which I'd primed with red oxide before over spraying with Hi Temp gloss black. On the advice of a fellow modeler who'd worked in the paint industry I stripped it all back to the bare metal gave it 2 coats of Hi Temp and have had a lovely gloss black chimney ever since. I stripped Boadicea's smoke box back and resprayed it in the same manner, yet to steam it though. Jim.

Hi Guys, I already have a small electric oven in the shed Used it to normalise the springs and occaisionally warm the odd cuppa. Won't be painting until the weekend at the earliest but still plenty to do (including the 'Honey Do' list!)

Blanks for the guide bar brackets are finished. I will drill the bolt holes and then wait for assembly to correctly locate the guide bar holes. Will get a glass dish tomorrow at the shops (2$ shop if I'm lucky) so I cab get the parts cleaned up in acetone ready for the painting. Patience Doubletop - I'm getting there! Attachments:

Nice looking brackets
Sorry didn't intend to come over as being pushy. Work at your own pace doing whatever takes your fancy at the time.

No problems Pete, feel free to keep your comments coming Well I can now reveal the colour I have chosen, the wheels have been painted but not yet baked. I havn't taken a photo yet but the brackets have now been shaped and look much better. Spent a lot of the day at the club for birthday parties and after standing around there for a few hours needed a break from standing so only did the painting today. Attachments:
