I think some of the loco companies played with their locos outside and the sun may have bleached the colours.
a good bet is to get someone to spray a colour swatch for you and get it colour matched at your end. Or..someone may know a car colour ref and you can go and get it mixed that way.

hi hayden, what lovely pics of 251! it looks like at some point the cab and main tender panel have been re-painted something more like LNER apple green. also the first time ive seen the replacement tender for the Stirling Single.
hi pete, i do hope you wont paint your 14XX the same colour as your Simplex - your Simplex is a shade of green once described to me as 'pine toilet disinfectant green' after someone painted a club Simplex the same colour, and is neither GWR green or BR dark green! post - 1906 GWR green is a very distinctive colour and deserves to be reproduced properly!
cheers, julian

Hayden Your three pics demonstrate why an App won't work. Three pictures of the same thing all with different shades. In fact the third one has two different shades in the same photo. One of livery websites advises never to use a photo for colour matching. Your approach of getting hold of some paint and trying it is probably the best option. Julian I take your point but it doesn't look that colour in the flesh, which really defeats the point of showing it........ Same loco choose your shade of green GWR 1466 on Google ImagesBack to my Mk3 Dart con-rods, the originals were scrapped, the first attempt proved that Martin Evans drawings in the original ME article were wrong so I've now got 3 sets. The crossheads were done the other weekend. Pete

Pete.
I have ordered a spray can of each Pantone 363 and RAL 6018 to test.
The three photos tried to illustrate my point of view that depending on the light conditions a bright apple colour green can look much darker in poor conditions. It was just a way to illustrate the variations and the one that I liked.
Hopefully the RAL 6018 will be the one.
I have caustic bathed the Maisie cab today and already I have revealed that beneath the present colour of dark green is hidden a much lighter green. I wonder what else has been hidden...apart from all the nice rivet detail!

Hayden Where are you getting your paint made up into aerosol cans? Another option is getting it sprayed professionally. When I did my Rob Roy I went to a local vehicle sprayers and they did all the parts for NZ$200, including the paint. I went through quite a few cans when doing the Simplex, so its worth looking into Just back from the spray shop Pete

Pete. It just so happens that I have a very good car painter right next door, with there very own bake oven too!
I would consider it once I have the test cans. The minimum purchase of paint is 240mls.
It seems I am lucky where I live, one good SG Foundry across the road, a powder coated down the road and two coal merchants and one of them sells the best Welsh Steam Coals and a spray painter next door :-) ! Cannot be too bad a place to live. Just that my model engineering suppliers are completely on the wrong side in the UK but you can't win em all can you?
Maisie cab is all clean back to bare metal. The maker had cut side windows in the cab but I will in fill these back to the original LBSC plan. The cab material is steel so will sweat in some metal and fair off. Half round edging is of course brass D. Looks well made though.
Pete..We have planned a raised track 3.5" and 5" Rally in Timaru for first week weekend March 2015 and 1 st weekend October.

Pete.
What paint type did they use? Guess autocolor PPG or the like?
Is it a black?
Nice.

Hayden Yes its black. It was early days for me in the hobby so I just asked them to paint it gloss black and that's what thy did. I gave them a rattle can for the running board edges. The platework is all in brass so I purchased one of the small sandblaster cabinets and cleaned all the panels and etch primed them I've no chips anywhere after 4 years BTW I eventually got the frames powder coated No sure if I'd make Timaru but retirement beckons so never say never. Looks very nice Pete and standard of work looks good quality.
Powder coating is a good but I think that I can manage painting myself.
I have the paint in cans now so will do some adhesion tests on steel.

Thanks; the workmanship was my Dads, an unfinished 30year old project which had sat on a shelf for 10 years in my place.
The powder coating is another story.

Hayden, the NRM provided the following to me quite a time ago: The colour reference numbers I quote are taken from the ICI Dulux Colour Dimensions System and should be available from most retail paint suppliers. GNR Engine Green 6040 G 40 Y Holly Green (for the tender edging) 8020 G 10 Y The engine and tender frames are finished in brown 8105 Y 53 R We used an etch primer on all surfaces and I am not sure if this available in New Zealand "u-pol Acid#8 etch primer" Available in spray cans in UK I would also advise you to use undercoat using suitable colour's. We used Craftmaster paints to supply all the paints as engine enamel and they provided a good service Final resultBit bigger than 3.5" at 10 1/4". I guess the lining on 3.5" gauge would be tricky !! The sign writing / numbering was done by Peter Whitaker (Baxterwood) who advertised on this board and did a great job. Peter's picture's on Facebook Philip

Phillip.
Thank you for this indepth data.
There are some very good cross-reference matching systems on the web, especially for hobby/model paints like Humbrol types etc.
I was aware of the other green on the tender but had not gone that far yet. I see that the frame are a brown/Black (Chocolate) but as I will not be removing the wheels I will stay with black for now I think.
I have the two cans of "Greens" to hand so will test a square if the rain stops this weekend.

Klendo.
I have taken a look on my screen and I think the RAL 6037 you mention is closer to the Pantone363c I selected to test. The other option, RAL6018 is a lighter shade of Green.
Given some fine weather I will make some tests in good daylight.
Did you mention from where this information came? NRM by any chance? I have not had a reply after I phoned them...oh well.
Thanks.

Hayden,
The Information came from that's what I used on my Stirling Single and also a good friend of mine is the paint expert from the Road locomotive society whoc is also a steam loco buff. He didn't moan so presumed it was about right

I have already discovered two layers of different colour paint on various parts cleaned on the Maisie so far.
