Mike,
I got two emails actually, one that said the same as yours and a second mentioning the 2 DVDs and the 2 to 3 weeks delivery.

Hi all. John here from the SAR Steam site. I just wanted to thank you all for the support. Mike I have a 100% delivery rate or your money back. While I will never recoup what I paid for these drawings, I know they are in good hands now. Gentlemen, just keep steam alive and treasure these drawings. Happy New Year. Best regards, John

Hey Johno, I have had a total of 45 recent orders which I thought dismal, especially for that price. I paid $20000 for the catalogue in 2003 (around 200000 ZAR). Since I have been going I estimate a 75% recovery which for me was disappointing over an 11 year period. In the end I have at least exposed them. Let's hope SAR Steam will dominate modeling and Live Steam.

I'm very grateful for what you've done. I bought the NGG16 set a year or two ago, the CD's never arrived but you sent me a downloadable link which worked fine. Spent many happy hours going through them, done some sizing for various scale models, decided it;s infeasible to model in 7.25" without a railway for it to live at, however the smaller scales do present some interesting figures. Now looking forward to receiving the full set!

I for one John would like to thank you for the purchase you made just over a decade ago, it is a pity nobody over here had your foresight at the end of steam, we would have a far more interesting model and full size world for it now. As you said, they are safe and will be cherished by all, thanks again!!
Cheers Ben

Hi John, I'll add my thanks as well as the drawings are an incredible resource. I'm hoping to build a 25NC (maybe Red Devil) in 2½" gauge sometime in the future. I got hooked on these after seeing Jim Nolan's website and then watching videos on Youtube Hopefully you will get more orders before the end of the month enabling you to recoup a bit more of the original cost. My two DVD's arrived this morning so thanks very much. They'll give me something to look at over the next few months! John

Thank you John Young for making these available. My set are in the post, It seemed too good a deal to turn down. While i day dream about building one of the Garratts, i quite like the look of the S1 shunting loco. Its more the shear size of the beasts. A 25NC in 3.5 gauge is similar in size to a 9F in 5", I would need a bigger workshop! John (baggo) what does a 25NC scale out to in 2 1/2"? It would be some reach over the tender. I would image it would be powerful enough to earn its keep passenger hauling.

John, Did you ever feel I should have sold them for twice the price? If there is one thing non one seems able to resist it’s a bargain. I have lost count of the people who told me it was just too good an offer to turn down. Mine arrived last week and I see the 25NC set includes all the 3D drawings you had done as well. I managed to lose that CD I bought from you years ago, so I am doubly pleased. Thanks for making this resource available over the years. If 3405 ever hits the tracks it would not have happened if I had been lugging A0 prints all round the hotels of Europe. It’s great to see there is a lot more interest in SA locomotives than I thought. Let’s hope some of this buzz turns into steam on the track one day. SA modelling seems to be having a bit of resurgence at the moment. The work Eric Hale is doing on producing castings and drawings for a 5” gauge 15F and 16D could really get the job going. As he is doing it all in 3D it might actually be a set of drawings you can build out of the box for a change. Sorry you did not make your fortune but you dealing with model engineers, careful, is not in the race. Jim

John (baggo) what does a 25NC scale out to in 2 1/2"? It would be some reach over the tender. I would image it would be powerful enough to earn its keep passenger hauling. Will It's a pretty big loco even in 2½" gauge! The scale works out at 0.7143" (18.143mm) to the foot, so slightly less than the scale for 3½" gauge, but the loco is comparable in size to some 5" gauge. Rough dimensions for 2½" - Length overall - 65.4"" (tender - 30") Driving wheels - 3.57" dia. Cylinders - 1.43" bore x 1.667" stroke Smokebox diameter - 4.91" Boiler barrel - maybe 4.75" dia. Grate area - 35.7 sq. ins. Tractive effort at 100psi - 81 lbs (which is not a lot less than a Simplex!) To utilise the tractive effort I would fit steel tyres to the wheels and make the loco as heavy as possible. The most difficult bit will be the loco frames. I want to get them looking pretty much like the full sized and will involve a lot of fabrication! John

Yes, this loco will be a 'modern technology' job. Life's getting too short to mess around doing it all by hand.

Great to see the momentum being generated by Eric Hale's work, which must simplify the task for anyone to build extremely accurate models. The 15F design has the scale cylinder bore reduced, which will help vastly to improve the driving experience by increasing steam chest pressure. I am toying with the idea of sleeving mine from 2 3/4" all the way down to 2", as the average loads you can expect to have at clubs never allow much more than a cracking open of the regulator, so steam chest pressures stay low, not much chuff and constant adjustment of the reg for every rise and fall of the track. Notching back does help, but not enough. My ideal would be steam chest pressures nearing full boiler pressure when starting, but without slipping (on a dry track). My logic says you can predict some of this with the simple formula of power = piston area x steam chest pressure. With this as a rule of thumb, reducing the bore by 1.4 seems to allow the same power with double the steam chest pressure. At the moment, I doubt I'm ever able to get more than 30 psi in the steam chest when starting an average trainload (have yet to sort out a steam chest gauge), so this would hopefully sound and feel much better with 60psi in there. cheers, andy

Hi Andy, The Americans etc. seem to have the philosphy of choosing cylinder bores to suit the maximim tractive effort you can put down on the rails rather than using scale size. It seems to work for them. The scale bores for the 2½" 25NC would be 1.43" which will be ok I think. A bit smaller than the average 5" gauge loco e.g a Simplex and it will be of a similar size and weight, especially with some lumps of lead hidden between the frames The boilers huge so steam consumption will not be an issue. The theoretical tractive effort at 85% of full boiler pressure (90psi) is about 73lbs but assuming the loco weighs 100lbs ( might be more) brings it down to 20lbs. I'll fit steel tyres to the wheels to help adhesion. Should be equal to a Simplex in 'pulling power'. Made a start on the design of the frames. I couldn't help modelling the smokebox to see how it looks. A friend at the club has a piece of 5" dia. brass tube that may just do the job John

As I have just noticed my name quoted a number of times, I would add that I am doing working drawings and castings for both the 15F and 16DA at present. Eric Hales
