Having been 'lurking' for some time in Ben and Peters logs about their Gresley three cylinder locos, i have now decided to start my one.The only difference is that i am about 12yrs into what should have been 18 months work and havent taken any pics at all.So what pops up on here are all 2015 onwards. The reasons for this extended build are many and varied, but two miocardial infarctions and a quad CABG sort of put a temporary halt for what must have amounted to two years in total. Add to that the arrival of two grandchildren, and a part time wedding car hire business, and getting my enthusiasm back into going to football regularly again, and reffing american football nearly every Sunday for the last 25 years, plus all the other jobs that crop up once you are retired, it sometimes took a back seat A WARNING to all of you who are still in full time employment and look forward to all those extra hours you will get once you walk out of the office for the last time. Think again, it just doesn't happen. So today before i get the frames shot blasted prior to painting to remove several years of verdigris and iron oxide, i took a pic of loco and tender as i have now got the driving wheels 'centered to 120 degrees' and realised i am further on than i thought. Another pic shows the nameplates by Diane Carney which she did from a photo of the original, as welll as the tender number plate (2817) and 4 worksplates The brass football were hand turned from bar and the panels were made with a dremel hand grinder (years ago) The more sharp eyed will notice that the 61630 is raised above the face of the worksplate. It would appear that BR ground away the original 2830 number that was cast and had a plate made to fix over it. These again were done from photos of the original worksplates

hi ron, im not an LNER fan/expert at all, but i dont think that the Sandringhams were particularly good locos in service, and the late eric langridge was very critical of them. i think you will have to be rather 'canny' to get a good version in miniature im afraid. though i'm more than happy to be proved wrong! cheers, julian

Julian Dont hold your breath but there could well be two new build B17 on the mainline, When is another matter. One site is relying on the generosity of ManU supporters, the other one seems to be a bit parochial as to the working area, and its catchment area for funding. Plus the website has less information on it than the Popes Sex life blog Still i wish them both well, even though my one has been 16 years in the making i am sure my build time will be shorter!!!

Ron What I do is:- Login to photobucket Select the photograph to attach. Note file size should be below 1MB. (Actually, it may auto scale...?) Where it says 'Share Links', left click the bottom one 'IMG' (For 1 second the link turns yellow and says 'Copied' before returning to previous state). On your MECH thread, click 'Reply' to create post Place cursor where you want the photo to go, then right click and 'paste' and you will get two lines of script starting (URL=https//....etc Click 'Preview' and you will see photo. I look forward to seeing this build progress too, whether or not the full size were any good it's an interesting and nice looking loco that isn't modelled much.

It has been used for many years as a Residential Schools Activity Centre and both my son and daughter have stayed there on occasion during their early teens (seems a long time ago now). For the visiting parents there is the nearby attraction of the 15" gauge Heatherslaw Light Railway which is steam hauled in summer. I couldn't find any good colour photos of 2817 on the web but maybe this could help while away a little time whilst sitting in front of the fire after retreating from a cold workshop..? I thought your plates were 2817 but your mention of brass footballs and 61630 should have alerted me to 'Tottenham Hotspur'. I did wonder if you were somehow related to the Joicey's of Ford Castle..! Alas I have little interest in football but will of course follow your build with great interest... Cheers Jim S

At long last the pics ( for what they are worth!!) however there is an old scottish saying Never show fools and bairns half finished jobs ...... not that either frequent here Reg Yes using Breeze drawings, but also have the B17 weighbook to do some detail stuff.. eg i wish i had the worksmainframe drawings etc prior rt getting the frames cut, AND having the balls to do the correct strtchers, but what done is done, as long as it looks like a B17 from the outside!!!

Hey that's nearly ready for steaming Ron.... she's going to be a fine model that's for sure.....very much looking forward to seeing her progress.....don't you just love Diane's work on the plates, I am so glad that I got her to do mine too so long ago, she is without doubt the best, shame she doesn't do them anymore although I believe her husband does some. By now you will hopefully have found that Michaels drawings are quite good. He used to keep in touch with all the builders of his designs and address any errors they found. You may still find a few errors but if the A1 and P2 drawings are anything to go by you should be ok. Michael included exhaust overlap on some of his designs though I don't know if the B17 has this. A bit of maths will reveal all. Mr.Don Ashton kindly spared me some of his valuable time and confirmed that exhaust overlap wasn't required in our scales so can be removed.
I'll certainly enjoy seeing your build come together.

Well the time spent knocking up the jigs for the mainframes, coupling rods, and wheel 120'ing, (is that right?)I have a chassis that does a full turn of the main wheels without the trace of a tight spot.( my first Brit frames only went a 1/4 round before binding solid) Oh such progress I know it is only the beginning, but at least i know everything is square and if the actual rods are made ( using the same jig, there should not be any difference. however saying it, and doing it are two entirely different things. Pics of the bits will be added tues/wed time to put the pics to the words

120*?, I thought the angles were odd, something like 120* for the outside cylinders and the inside crank offset so that was something like 118* & 124* between it and the wheels.

Foster, That is for the big boys A4/A3 with the inclined middle engine. The B17 has a horizontal middle one so the exact 120 fits in. however with a setting jig, it should be easy to do the A3/4

Apologies Ben, If Grandson* behaves tomorrow should have the pics of the Jurassic Frame jig and wheel 'quartering',along with the Mk 1 coupling rod fitting to prove everything square. Have just permanently fitted the crankpins tonight so keeping fingers crossed the little buggers didnt wobble a bit the other night when i rolled the chassis 1 revolution and fooled me into thinking all was well
* he has just turned two and knows how to turn the miller on and off, as well as sitting in front of the Myford and working the shandles. However he ha been a bit reluctant lately to come into the shed, but last week when i took the pic, he saw the engine like that for the first time and went ape over it, running back to the house to tell Grandma about the 'BIG' engine. Now everytime we pass the shed he wants to go in and look at it, especially the big wheels. Theres hope in me that he might finish the Brit that has been under the worktop for God knows how long.

I'm sure he will Ron with a little encouragement from his granddad....it was my grandfather who had the biggest influence on me re trains, I bet it's the same for many who grow up to follow this hobby , I'll certainly be doing my best with my grandchildren...have 3 with another due in a few weeks, i suspect there will be a few others too....
