Despite nothing happening in the workshop at the moment the foundry have been busy making progress on the 10x injectors so I have some photos for you all to enjoy and hopefully I'll have my hands on the castings tomorrow. So these castings are being done in the UK the "traditional way" using a master pattern and mould for the waxes but we are making these hollow with a core to fit the cones and include all the passageways. First up we have the core mould with the soluble wax in place. 10x core by Adam Cro, on Flickr Next up is the above core placed in the main mould for the injector casting. 10x core in pattern by Adam Cro, on Flickr With the core in place the wax is injected in and we are left with the following. These are then left to soak in water to dissolve out the cores leaving us with the hollow waxes. 10x Core and Pattern 1 by Adam Cro, on Flickr And now we have the castings! 10x casting 2 by Adam Cro, on Flickr 10x casting 1 by Adam Cro, on Flickr John has worked hard on the cone design and proven it works in 2 scale bodies and one test body so we are confident he's got it right so the next test is for me to get them right and also see if CNC will be possible to produce the cones which will allow for a batch to be done far quicker than I could do with everything on at the moment. More soon! Adam

Been a little while since I updated here, too busy working on the damn house! Plasterers in at the moment and we have no bathroom as I had fun over the weekend ripping it out! Anyway, down to business. I have spent the laser few evenings when not doing DIY getting some No 7 Wakefield lubricators modelled up in various forms. The come in a few different configurations apparently so here are the 4 I have modelled. Wakefields by Adam Cro, on Flickr Time to get my last order of the year placed with Mike and get back in the workshop. Adam

They look great, saw your FB post a couple of days ago as well. Are these adaptable to make working cylinder lubricators? or even motion lubricators?

Chris,
In 7 1/4” yes certainly in 5” they would be very fiddly and once a pump is in there not much space for oil but I know Pete is going to for 4472. I haven’t designed the ratchet box in 5” to work as it’s difficult enough in 7 1/4”.
I plan them as dummies on my B1, might use them as drip feeds to various places. We’ll see.

A little catch up on the last few days. I managed to get a couple of days off work to go get the Tree with the wife and do a little around the house now we have our new bathroom in before spending two days at the club for our Winter Lights Event where I ran the Black 5 for 2 nights. Over the 4 days we managed to carry 3,636 passengers. I've never seen the queue quite like it with hour wait times on Saturday night - a few photos at the end. In between all of this I managed some time in the workshop so I thought I'd share some photos for you all. First up I have been assembling many 9f pedestals in various gauges, this is a 5" pedestal which will sport a working Vacuum Brake and Blower Valve with a dummy Sanding valve. Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr Next up we have a super scale 5" manifold which will head out to Australia once complete also for a 9f. The pipe fittings I now get made through Polly using their CNC service. Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr Lastly I got to work on the next batch of 5" BR Injector Steam Valves. Again all parts are now CNC machined by Polly due to quantity I would be here for hours doing these repetitive jobs so I am out sourcing where possible which allows me to focus on the machining of the castings and the final assembly where I can oversee the final parts and ensure the quality is there. Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr I also managed to pick this up at the weekend for pennies, Couventry die head and a selection of BA chasers. Rather pleased with this little bargain just need to keep my eye out for some ME chasers to suit. Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr And as promised, couple photos of the Winter Lights Event at Beech Hurst. Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr Adam

Is that first 'Winter Lights' picture when you engaged Warp drive? It certainly has a Star Wars/Dr Who feel too it doesn't it? 6 big nets hung on scaffolding but when one goes wrong its about 3 hours to replace as we found out on Friday Morning.

You just reminded me of something from my film days Adam...'Event Horizon' the 'Daylight' space station orbitting earth had a thousand or so 'grain of wheat' bulbs ( this was 1996 so before small LED's) one bank blew, took half a day to replace...Director wasn't amused...Mind you our issue was nothing compared to the camera crew's...they ran out of film half way through the shot. Not a problem you might think...trouble was this was a motion control shot (if you've seen the film it's where the camera pans back from Sam Neil looking out the pod window and continues pulling back while spinning threw the middle of the space station. At the time the longest motion control pull back ever tried, IIRC about 14 secs of film...but this takes a long time in real time, about 4 hours....the air was blue that day... Pete

Another update, in one week? I'm spoiling you guys. A package arrived yesterday from Mike in NZ just in time for me to get it sent out to a customers wife for his Xmas present, what a lucky guy. Anyway, what was it? A lovely set of Wakefield Lubricator castings for a 7 1/4" B1. I made the most of our light box at work, might take some more castings in tomorrow. Superb lubricator castings Adam!!!! Those water valve lever castings are amazing too!! The clarity of the lettering, in 5" g, is just unreal. The photos could be of full size ones if you hadn't told us otherwise!!!!

A little update from what I've spent last couple of days working on for myself seeing as it was 12 months ago I last worked on the 9f. Problem is the loco isn't here, its in Dads workshop still but I am working on all the CAD models for the rest of the cab so didn't need the loco anyway. Just a few shots to show where I am now, adding all the little details will mean I won't have to be adding holes later on, most bits are there now just have to work on the roof vents and then corner angles to hold it all together. 9f cabs were typically welded so most rivets will be flush on the outside, I'll rivet and soft solder most of this to ensure the strength is there unless I feel anything 100% needs Silver Solder. Firstly a reminder of where the cab got to this time last year. Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr As can be seen the floor looks a little low and the boiler shape is frankly horrible compared to how it should be but we will do our best! This is how the CAD model now looks for the rest of the cab. 1 by Adam Cro, on Flickr 2 by Adam Cro, on Flickr 3 by Adam Cro, on Flickr 4 by Adam Cro, on Flickr Picture 3 shows the washout access doors, I thought I might as well try make these work - why not! Picture 4 shows the coal sprinkling valve sat behind the injector water valve bracket along with the cab side window runners and the rain strips I am currently working on. Over to Dad's workshop tomorrow to look at this 2 1/2" Schools now I have finished the new crank axle for him for his Christmas Present - time to key some wheels - any tips for this on CI wheels would be much appreciated.
