Hi.
Just about to re-install my Maisie boiler and asking if Woven Fibreglass cloth is acceptable for sandwiching between the boiler and brass cleading?
I only have 1 1/6th" space as previously it had no insulation, just brass sheet so not much gap.
Have though of using cork, balsa and foil and read other forum posts from other years debating merits of these, some good, some bad. Want to keep it simple and I can get mat easily.

Sounds fine to me. I used similar on my Rob Roy boiler with no problems.

Rex.
Good thing to is that there are various grades available also.Maybe a few drops of Loctite to tack it in place and all will be fine prior to fitting brass cleading.

Hi Hayden
Woven fibreglass sounds ok to me, not sure how it compares with the commercial thermal lagging supplied by some ME outlets, I would expect it's similar...Another thing to consider under the lagging is the use of some tin foil, I've done this to my 4470. This was also used full size although back then it was called aluminium foil...I have seem it stated as being used on Gresley pacifics.

Greenglade.
I was reading some previous forum posts, maybe some of yours from 2013 on the subject and they mentioned foil too.
Would the foil go between the boiler and the fibreglass or between the Glass matt and the outer brass cleading?
Anything must be better than what was there….nothing.
Thanks.

I put it directly to the boiler, then fibreglass and then cleading. I did this primarily as the boiler on 4470 (LBSC Heilan Lassie) is the same size as the smokebox, which is wrong so I needed something very thin at the front end to avoid a step, the cleading tapers from that point and thus plenty of room for the fibreglass as I worked my way back. I covered the entire boiler with foil first....it was only later while reading about Gresley pacifics (something I spend an awful amount of time doing it seems) that I found reference to the use of aluminium foil during an overhaul.

Thank you for this information, indeed that is what I shall do. Problem solved within the hour…you can have the day off now, and i'm off to bed.

If I remember correctly from my physics lessons, foil should work best if you put the shiny side inwards.

Hello REX----- yes, that sounds familiar..Shiny reflects, matt dissipates ( Motorcycle cylinder fins for example).... PETE}--- I mis-read your post just then and was wondering why you covered the entire boiler with OIL first !!....(I need more of those Pink tablets I suspect !!).....Gave me a bit of a much-needed chuckle after being involved with that recent locked thread incident recently......
