I started this thread by saying that I had commissioned a Peter Blackham (who trades as ‘Blackham Transfers’) to produce lining for my 5 inch gauge Isle of Wight ‘O2’ no. 35 ‘Freshwater.’ I paid Mr. Blackham nearly £200 in February but, as I only ever received one proof transfer, and as recent emails had gone unaswered, this week I sent a Recorded Delivery letter instructing Mr. Blackham to either send me a full set of transfer proofs by the end of this month or cancel the order and refund my money. He has chosen the latter course, but I found the following message in my ‘Inbox’ this afternoon:
Peter,
you added the valence lining after you had ordered the transfers. You have continually insisted that the transfers were to be three colour, even though all the photos you sent demonstrated that the lining was the Southern Region standard of two colour straw and red. This included the last photo you sent which you claimed showed three colour lining. It did not.
I am loathe to make transfers which I know to be wrong, as your final demand that I make transfers which are different from the photos you supplied and as it will increase my cost considerably to re draw the artwork to comply with your wrong specification, I hereby cancel your order.
I have sent you, by means of Paypal, the full amount you paid for the transfers. I have not deducted anything for the abortive and extra work which you have caused.

What he has said is complete nonsense. Right at the beginning I sent him a picture of ‘O2’ no. 18 ‘Ningwood’ at Ventnor, and on this it is obvious that the valance is lined. It is also not true that the pictures showed some fictitious Southern ‘standard’ of two-colour lining and, as proof, I sent him a scan of the picture that is at the top of page 30 in ‘Rails in the Isle of Wight’ by Robert Hendry, where it can be clearly seen that the lining on the bunker of no. 16 ‘Ventnor’ is the BR standard ‘mixed traffic’ lining of a thick grey line with a thin straw line on its inner edge, then a separate inner red line. Why Mr. Blackham cannot accept this I cannot imagine.
I am absolutely furious that Mr. Blackham has made these allegations against me, and I hope that my unfortunate experience will act as a warning to other modellers that this man will take your money, prevaricate for months, then decide that HE is the expert and you are wrong and then try to pin the blame on you for HIS failure.
Caveat Emptor!
