Got into a bit of a lengthy discussion today about Black 5's and what I thought to be a fact that a number were painted in various shades of green by British Rail for a trial period. The gentleman that I was talking to insisted that there was discussion by British Rail but never actually painted. Can anyone enlighten me on whether this actually happened and if possible are there any photograph anywhere of full size green Black 5's as evidence if I am right? I have seen models painted Apple Green but not full size.

Hi Orville - Yes, you are absolutely correct in this. There were some Black fives turned out in green. I will try and find some photographs - Reg

Hi Orville,
From memory only I'm quite sure that one Class Five was painted in apple green - as a trial there would hardly be any need to treat others. There is a 5" model of that one at Urmston, whose owner chose to portray an engine on which he worked.

Some weeks ago I was reading a book that mentioned the Green "black 5's".
The trouble is that I cant recall which book it was! However, I will have a look and see if I can find it and if I do, will post it here.

I once saw a beautiful model of Black 5 number 4763 built by John Adams at Station Road Steam and that was finished in apple green. I still wish I'd sold a kidney or something to buy it. It is a superb model. If you look in the archive section of the SRS web site it is stock number 2248 and there's a bit more information there.

The real 44763 was painted in lined apple green in 1948 as part of an experiment by the newly formed British Railways to judge public opinion. IIRC it was displayed at Marylebone station with some Stanier carriages painted in a faux LNWR 'plum and spilt milk'. A Jubilee was also painted in a lighter green than subsequently adopted. In the late 60's/early 70's preserved Black 5's 44806 (at Haverthwaite) and 44932 (at Carnforth) were painted in a sort of Brunswick green. There is film of the 5"g. 44763 on Youtube. Cheers, Ray.

These were in preservation. There were a couple of Black 5's in early preservation that went into some wacky liveries - If I recall correctly, 45407 went red for a time, 45212 at the KWVR went into a "wallpaper" livery for an advert and 44932 was green. The loco that Reg mentioned was built by John Adams, sold by Station Road Steam a few years back - www.stationroadsteam.co.uk/stock%20pages/2248/index.htm

According to the LMS Locomotive Profile (Pictorial Supplement to No.6) M4763 was (as has been noted) painted in LNER green with black and white lining. M4764 (later 44764) was painted GWR green with black and orange lining and M4762 was painted in Sothern style malachite green with yellow "British Railways" lettering on the tender instead of the usual cream. All these, along with another Black 5 in the LNWR style livery that later became standard, were so painted in January 1948 and paraded at Addison Road Station, Kensington.
