As its getting open fire time again I had to buy some smokeless coal as the garage had no proper stuff. This is all regular egg shaped lumps. It burns without flame, just redness and it is so hot I have to sit outside and watch TV through the front window. I wonder how it would perform in a loco firebox

hi andy,
years ago the small 'ovoids' of egg shape were made principally at Abercwmboi in the Cynon Valley near Aberdare, not far from where Pete (Smallbrother) lives. it was called 'phurnacite'. my lounge stove also used to love them.
i have no idea what they are now comprised of - certainly not welsh steam coal dust as of old!
cheers, julian

Andy
It sounds worth a try.
In Ozz we can get brown coal briquettes which sound about the same. Some of the larger 7.25" engines run on then with very little smoke and no fuss. However break them up and the smoke like billio. I tried them as broken bits once when first learning to keep a fire alight and just about gave myself asthma. The full sized lump will not go through the fire hole so I only use them now when having to leave the loco standing without the blower as you do for a T or P break. The just sit there with smoke idly issuing from the funnel and spring inot like when you return and put the blower on. They are also good for lighting up as they catch well.

I found a part of one in the Scot's coal box one day...broke it in two stuffed it through the door....well it burnt away but I can't say if it contributed anything!

We used to call these "Dr Bronowski's nuts" - after Jacob Bronowski, director of research at the Coal Board (amongst many other things).

Hello, Many years ago I went into ex-Avenue plant (coke plant) with work. They made small batches of the fuel you are on about (1000 tons) I used some on my T/E they where no use at all as they are made from the average house type coal. Albert

One of our former club members insisted on using 'coal eggs' on her 4" scale traction engine. Steaming could be best described as uninspiring and the fumes from it didn't half make your eyes water. Ray.
