Hi all, I've recently bought and installed a Myford Super 7 lathe at home. After looking at the lubrication on it, it requires an oil gun as there are oil nipples not pots in certain places. I had a look on the Myford website and the RRP inc VAT was £71.40 for an oil gun! Do they retail normally for that price or is it just the Myford sticker that adds 50% onto the actual price? So my question is does anyone know of where I can source a suitable oil gun to fit, other than Myford themselves? Cheers, Dan

The proper Wanner oil guns are very good. They do come up on ebay from time to time.

I'd search eBay for 'Oil gun', I'm sure there are loads of suitable ones for a fraction of that price.

Dan Maybe you could make a sketch with the dimensions of your oiling points and ask one of the suppliers if it's compatible

I looked for one for my Myford, but could never find one, and didn't really fancy paying Myford's exorbitant prices. Mine had been run with grease instead, so I kept on with it.

Guys, I bought the other type of oil can you see on a couple of stands at the ME shows, two sizes in cast alloy. Yep, not cheap but loads better than the tin ones.
As for lubing via the Myford nipples: I unscrew them and fill the hole up using my cast alloy (above) oil can. I've actually got a (Myford??) pump oil gun thingy but it was always a bit oily so is empty and resting somewhere.

That's a good point Steve, and it also suggests another two possibilities....
1) Unscrew what's there, and make an adaptor for a fitting you can get, along with an oil can. 2) Sell Dan your oil can.

The oil nipples are the raised sort as are here; At the risk of sounding like a Yorkshireman, isn't £55 still a bit steep for an oilcan? If I can't find a more "suitably priced" oil can/pump, I might look into changing the oiling points if they are a standard thread. Cheers, Dan

I think it is.
Although no good for the raised nipple type, the Reilang cans are very good quality and a good deal cheaper, I think I picked mine up for about 30 quid. They use a frustrating nozzle thread however, at M4.5, if I recall correctly.
I wonder if the raised oil nipple types are better than the recessed ones in my Warco that are all different sizes so one nozzle can't do them all. Whenever I try to oil anything I end up shooting oil over my shoulder, up my nose, onto next door's cat 50 feet away, anywhere but where it's supposed to be going.

Right hand type looks just like a normal grease nipple? Nothing to stop you replacing them with oil cups with spring lids if you want

hmm..they look like standard oil nipples...you'll find a cheap oil gun from somewhere like Halfords for probably around £5...I use one myself....although I've had it a long time now so may be out of date on price...

I tried several 'grease guns' filled with slideway oil and they leaked. Only the original Wanner brand seemed to hold the oil. But some nipples are positioned such that the head cannot connect on. An oil can has not got enough pressure to depress the ball, so it needs pushing in with a small 'nipple' inside the oil delivery tube. I wired some tubing onto an ordinary oil gun with a brass nipple I made held near the front piece of tube. When you push the tubing over the lathe nipple the brass one just depresses the ball and you can pump oil to your heart's delight! You can feel the point at which the ball is depressed. Norm. Edit: the knarled bit on the brass is where it has been rolling on the tops of the nipples. There is a small dimple (0.020" or less) in the middle that pushes the ball in and an oil feed hole inside that.
