Came across this earlier, and thought some may find it interesting. They've designed and built a small water cutter suitable (and cheap enough apparently) for a home workshop. They're about to start a kickstarter campaign so they can go into production: wazer.com/There's some videos of their machine cutting various things on youtube, including steel, china, a steak, and a rolex watch! www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pzs1mzgWLv0

That's indeed interesting. But I regard their availability the same as the existence of personal 3D printers. I mean maybe if you make a really extensive use of them it's worth the investment, but I wonder if that will be ever the case for a ME. Also, most probably you will be limited by the particular features of your personal device. On the other hand you will get a more flexible service and better result if you use a specialist company. They keep investing and upgrading their capabilities to the latest technology. Compare Shapeways offerings and possibilities with what you can do with your desktop 3D. There's simply no possible comparison. About cutting services, these days you can order laser or water cut parts for a bargain. You don't even have to provide the material! So it's difficult for me to see whether having your own water cutter would be worth the investment now or in the future.
