Recently I received a copy of Chris Vine's new book "How Not to Paint a Locomotive" and it is is stunning effort. I've not yet had time to digest the entire contents but from a quick scan it's perhaps the most through subject treatment and best graphics quality of any ME book, or most books for that matter, I've ever had. Would that they were all this good. What would be a good companion is a similar work on metal finishing, motion work, bracketry, brightwork, etc. from an exhibition perspective.

I agree first class book. Having seen Bongo at several shows including Bristol last Friday it’s not just the paintwork the rest of the workmanship is excellent. I think Chris should be able to complete the series how about it Chris.

I was stood by bongo on the Friday, and someone close commented that the finish was too fine. I carefully pointed out that if you looked closer the finish was as close to the full size as you could get, especially with the scale flame cut frames left from the lazer cutting and painted. Just perfect.
Inspired for a few more months in the workshop.
David.

Possibly a justified complaint, as their entry had no doubt come in a very close 2nd.

I agree with David. The finish is just right. Not too glossy, very realistic. Clickable thumbnails:- Evidently one thing that can’t(??) be accurately scaled is a piece of rag for the fireman!

Hi George Yes I think you're right. Could be used for wrapping the backhead up during the night too? I wasn't going to mention it in case I had left it behind!! Mind you I doubt Chris is as scary as Jack Owen! Cheers Brian

Sorry about the overscale cloth in the cab when at Bristol. I am afraid I had been rather busy and did not have time to do much of a clean up before the show.
I will try better for Ascot and hope to see some of you there!
Chris.

Chris, I bought a copy of your book at AP and just wanted to say that even if I didn't want to do any painting, the book makes a very good read. Many thanks for putting in the effort to write it as I am sure my modeling will benefit from your mistakes! John
