Just seen on local BBC South tv ( 6:30-7:00) this evening some footage on when the Isle of Wight had steam railways! Only a short film but according to the reporter never been seen footage? They did a link to Facebook via the BBC, sorry iam not a Facebook person, iam sure you can go to the BBC catch up as well, also showed Haven street as it is today, you might find it interesting! Cheers Chris

Wonderful!
Now, the footage of Calbourne leaving Newport in 1971 I have never seen before.
In the cab is Tom 'Jacko' Jackman in grease top hat and denim jacket on the right.
And guess who is on the left?! None other than Don Young of ME fame. His experience on that day is described in his auto biography book of which I have a signed copy.
This is 36 or so seconds in.
At 1.11 seconds you have a very rare bit of footage of one of the old IWR 2-4-0T Beyer Peacock locos.
When I was at school on the Isle of Wight many of my schoolfriends were grandchildren of legendary drivers on the Isle of Wight system in steam days. They were real folk heroes (the grandparents).
Cheers, Julian

I have never seen that film and I work at the railway. Great place to work for and listening to some of the stories are brilliant. To be able to fire the 02 is a privilege. Wonderful engine to be on the footplate of. Can't wait till next season to do it again. Dan

This is a bit off topic but I was an old friend of Tom Jackman ('Jacko'). On various occasions we discussed that monumental day in January 1971 when all the IOWSR stock had to be moved at just a few days notice from Newport to Havenstreet, before the track was lifted.
Tom built Don's Lucky Seven in 3.5"g. It is the best loco I've ever driven in miniature, and went like a rocket.
How Don came to be on the footplate of Calbourne on that monumentus day in 1971 is quite a story. Tom's version is unprintable, as is what Don then did! Don has described what he did in print, but other recollections (and there were plenty of others on the footplate that day) had a rather different view.
I have always said on here that much of what Don wrote needs to be taken with a hefty pinch of salt.
He was incredibly kind and generous to me when I started out on this lark.
Cheers, Julian
