Hi All My wife has developed an irrational intense hatred for my 990 to the extent that I am getting ill, so I will dispose of her (it) next week. Wish she would stick to gardening!!! Thanks to all who have help me, Cheers David

Just to let us all know that tomorrow we will take the 990 back to someone who can master her. She is without doubt one of the most perfectly proportioned locos as only the Midland could do but this one has defeated me and I will pass her on. Piston valves are a challenge and outside admission makes it worse. All the helps and advices have helped but it just seems to bring on another one so I will retire the race horse and rely on the Princess of Wales to get me from here to there! I have learnt a lot so back to the good old 0-6-0 world with my Aspinal!!! Thanks and cheers David
PS Peter Dupen's 999 comes up for auction at Drewearts, Tuesday 21 September, looking forward to the response, it has the Sivert valve gear too.

I shall miss your updates - your wrestling with her was a fascinating education - for the audience if not for you!

How well did the Peter Dupen one run?

I saw Peter's loco running at Beech Hurst back in the early 1970s. Ran like a dream as far as my then-untutored eye could tell.

I shall miss your updates - your wrestling with her was a fascinating education - for the audience if not for you! Malcolm Malcolm It was for me too!!!. One thing I learnt on Tuesday was at the point when the SRS people tested it on a rolling road to make sure it worked. They put their ears to the chimney and one could hear the release of air (not steam) for each of the four events. In reverse it was strong and even but in forward one release was a little weaker. As some one pointed out recently, with Walschearts even a little play in some of the linkage can put the timing out with piston valves. Peter Dupen's 999 went for £7k at Drewearts. I was actually in the car driving north when the auction sgarted so we stopped for lot 87 and watched the bidding on my mobile phone. Yes sorry to see 990 go but I think I will be better off doing the Aspinal and mucking around with a couple of other 'projects'. Thanks to all for your support, back to work!!! Cheers David
