Hi folks.
I received the Photobucket email like so many others on here, and other forums. I read most posts on the current thread, hoping they might have had a change of heart. Anyway, I decided I ought to get my photos onto Imgur and then edit my Evening Star build thread.
Now, when this PB blackmail raised it's ugly head, I emailed PB, saying how stupid and commercially suicidal, their action was, and I hoped they would reconsider their action, not expecting anything to come of it. This morning, when I went into my Photobucket account, I COULDN'T ACCESS ANY OF MY PHOTOS!!!......so be warned.
Be careful what you say to them if you haven't got backup of your photos. Luckily I keep all my photos on the computer and only uploaded to embed them in the thread; so personally it doesn't bother me that they have blocked my access, but others, on here, may use them to store their photos, and being blocked from access could be an absolute disaster for some!!
Bob.

Thanks for the heads up Bob, this doesn't surprise me at all, the new CEO of PB is clearly a real POS.. I haven't said anything to PB so might have a little more time before losing everything...I have been slowly editing my own thread, just spent another hour this morning, it's a souless task which is why it's taking me so long...I do have backups but without being able to open the images to see what the picture is could make the task impossible.
cheers

Hi Pete.
You are so right. Without being able to open the original photos it's almost impossible to edit the threads. I have got some pointers in the text of mine, but it will be quite a job to pick the right photos. My photos are safe on my computer, and backup USB drive, but many use PB to store their photos, to leave more room on their hard drives. If PB do this to too many, they risk someone on Facebook (I'm not on FB), or Youtube, concocting a thread that would go viral - then see how it effects PB and their advertisers!

There has been a lot of chat on FB, in fact, most of PB's recent timeline is full of angry comments...I don't think that PB cares..as I said elsewhere, PB needs to dump a lot of material to keep going. How this affects them in the long term is anyone's guess...I fear that other hosting sites may be keeping a close eye on PB to see if they can do something similar...

It makes me wonder if this is a reaction by PB to hold onto those images following what has I suspect been a mass exodus.
After I downloaded all of my images I deleted everything, but I couldn't delete the account.

I could get into my PB account but couldn't access my albums, this morning, no matter what I did, and there was a PB note that referred to my snotty email, that seemed to be saying that because of my email they had closed my account. I've just gone into my build thread and clicked on a PB logo, where there should have been one of my images, and I got straight into my albums!! This is crazy!!! At least if access stays available, I can replace the PB images with ones I upload to Imgur.

I found that the advantage after I downloaded all the PB images was that when uploaded later to Flickr, they retained some of the reference ID string name which made replacing them with the correct uploaded Flickr image link much easier.

It's all very odd. I can access my albums if I log in but then I have no idea which photos relate to which posts and the task of replacing the images is I'm afraid, too time consuming for me when I need to get on with the build. I replaced a couple of recent blocked images relating to Boadicea's tender but even then I'm not sure that I have the same images as before. PB's tactics are a ripoff pure and simple.

Hi Jim
It is a long winded process to replace the image link.
I found on another forum, that I had to edit each post in the thread with the PB links. In this mode the link address was shown with an image ID embedded in the middle. I use this image ID to locate the correct image in Flickr then copied it and pasted it from Flickr, over the link string in the post edit, then saved the edited post. this worked for me.

Jim,
yes I do get access to your PB album via that link. However I can't get the individual photos - when I click on any of them I get the dreaded PB "Please Update you account to enable 3rd party hosting" warning.
In the Photo hosting links box at the RHS of the screen it does show the image reference so if this relates to your images on your PC then you wouldn't need to worry about having to download them from PB.
Its probably a job for those long winter nights !

Hi Jools,
Like most on the site I've kept the photos on my computer and uploaded duplicates to PB so all is ok there. Until I get around to it if you or any one else is interested in a particular photo and what it's illustrating send me a PM. PB really has created mayhem and disaster with their ransom/blackmail demands.

When I got the first inkling as to what PB wanted I just deleted all 5,000+ images from their site, sent them a polite email, which they either did not read or they ignored as they have sent me a few reminders to cough up US $399.00, well that's not going to happen anytime soon, I haven't lost any images as I didn't use PB to store anything, but it has made a mess of quite a few very long and involved restorations on 8 vehicles, I suppose I could work my way through it all, but in the short term I have added a line or two to each of those restorations apologising for PB actions, cheers Dennis

Perhaps we should all look at the adverts on PB and email each advertiser, with a complaint. If enough people email them, they may think twice about their PB advertising - and get it on Facebook so that others, not connected with the forum, also complain to the advertisers.

I know about the complaining going on on Facebook, but what I was meaning was to send complaint emails to the actual advertisers. They may not see the complaints on FB so perhaps making them aware might cause them to have second thoughts about being associated with PB if it adversely effects their business.

I had all my PB photos in albums so downloaded them one by one. Each photo retained its title which had been used in the forum links pointing to it. Once I knew I had everything I deleted each album and then found the 'close acount' link in the PB profile pages. The page asked why so took the opportuinity for a snotogramm. Some days later they informed me that my account was now closed. Deleteing the photos is only a gesture as they will have backups.
Posting the imgages to another hosting site is relativley easy. Having downloaded the photos from PB to your PC you'll have a reference to the image and the filename used in your original link on a forum, however, if you take you time to find your way around your new host you'll find the best approach to getting the new link detail for a particular image. Get into a bit of a routine and you'll soon get you links updated to the new hosting site.

Unfortunately I suffered a computer problem a couple of years back and lost a few of my photos although luckily most of them were backed up. I recently tried to copy some of the lost photos from PB. It was time consuming and what I got seemed to be compressed, or at least very poor quality. I'm sure the originals were higher resolution.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Pretty sure PB reduce the size of your uploads and probably also quality at the same time and I think this is explained in the T&C's. This reduces the storage requirements they need and also bandwidth for uploads and viewing.
