Does anyone know of a source for 1/4" diameter red line gauge glass? I can find metric diameters, but, not imperial diameters. At least not as small as 1/4".
Thanks,
David

Hi David,
I will have a look in my box of gauge glass tomorrow for you. I dont use the schellbach glass myself as it is more brittle. Instead I fix a white card behind the glass with diagonal black lines.
Cheers, Julian

Hi Julian,
Yes, I have a card with diagonal stripes on it behind my glass. It does work quite well. The problem is, when I am on my riding car, I am too high to get the effect of the diagonal lines very well. It looks great in the steaming bay, when I am standing next to the loco, but not from my riding car!
So, 6mm red line and 6.5mm blue line is available from the UK. 6mm is .236" and 6.5mm is .255". I think I might be able to use one or the other of these. I'll probably go with the 6.5mm blue line.
Meanwhile, if you have "real" 1/4" red line, I would certainly be interested.
Thank you, David

I've heard similar comments to Julian's regarding the brittleness of shellback gauge glass. Would it not be possible to use fine self adhesive automotive pinstriping to make a red or black line by sticking it to the rear of the tube? That way you'd have the strength of the standard gauge glass with a visible line to indicate the water level. Just a thought.

Yes, it is possible to put your own stripes on the back of the glass. This has been suggested by others on another forum. It may be one of the things that I try.
