I have now made another injector to Brown's drawings, but to fit my pipework, so the injector is a little longer than Brown's, but the cone distances are exactly the same. Unlike my first injector, which is end regulated, this one is annular regulated as most commercial ones are, and therefore has a fine nozzle on the steam cone, rather than a blunt end. My end regulated injector does work, but is fiddly to get it to run dry at the overflow, with a very fine adjustment of the water supply required. I have made some adjustments and will try it next time I steam the loco - Thursday if the weather is fine! I will also try the new one to Brown's design, so keep fingers crossed. As Roger has said, the most important adjustment is the regulation gap, and can be a matter of thou for the greatest success. Shims help, but are fiddly to make in thicknesses below four thou. If I still need to adjust the steam cone, I am going to try making the flange a screw-fit, so that I can quickly make fine adjustments. The first image shows the delivery being drilled with a No 68 drill. You can tell if the drill is centred because it will start to bend if you put too much pressure on it. I have heard model engineers say that a Myford lathe is not sensitive enough for such small drills, but I have found no problem with my very old, grey, Myford Super 7, (so much nicer than the awful green they painted the later ones with)! I can easily 'feel' through the wheel on the tailstock. The next image is the tool to make the bellmouth entry to the cone. The four cones are shwn below. There are also two depthing tools made of silver steel to ensure that the combining cones are correctly positioned. I get the nice push fit for the steam and delivery cones by machining them to about a thou oversize and then finishing off with a fine file and emery cloth. The drawings are shown beneath. I can see we will all be ordering "Cloutman" injectors at the club soon!

OK I now have a working ejector which has been tested on Ian's driving trolley and works well. The first one did not produce enough vacuum until I reduced the steam, so I made another steam cone with a smaller venturi. This did the trick and also uses less steam and is quieter. I think I could even reduce the cone size further, but it may not produce vacuum at lower steam pressures.
The modified first injector worked well enough to be used, but was fussy and needed fine adjustment on the water. The new one did not work well at all, with only a dribble coming from the overflow. It started smartly but then just produced steam. When I took it apart I found that the bypass hole to the ball chamber had not been drilled through so I extracted the combination cones and cleared the blockage! I may have damaged these cones so will try it again and see if it works, or make two new cones.
If it works, I may then make a new steam cone with End regulation, as I prefer the blunt nozzle which is not so prone to wear as the annular regulation.

I am going to have to get Roger to show me how to machine the injector bodies on the Tormach, as they are a pain to solder, and as you can see I am not very good at it. The last one got too hot and the solder boiled!

Another thing I meant to say is that since the mods to my mechanical lubricators, they both work well driven from the valve rod, even when notched back fully and on the bottom hole in the rocker arm. The pump axles now have rigid bearings and high quality clutches, which are definitely worth the extra expense.
If anything they are still producing too much oil and the chimney is getting really gummy! It is not splashing spray over my face though! I remember a Soton track member driving a Heilan Lassie used to end the day with his face plastered and the chimney soaking in wet oil. I always made hydrostatic lubricators with sight feeds after that. But these seem OK, and the loco is running light.
Last run I did pull a trolley with I think five adults, and it was noticable how much more stable the loco was. These 0-4-0s have a lot of overhang, front and back, and do tend to bounce a lot when running light.

Hi Ed, Nice work on the injector & ejector. The guy who was the guru at my club made the bodies out of bar stock.....one piece. Didn’t look quite so prototypical as made from rod but there’s no soldering required.

You need to be logged in to Flickr to access the choices you need, then choose BBcode instead of Share. Works on desktop as well as IOS. Gary

Hi Gary, Probably should have been a bit clearer. It’s from the iPad that has the issue.....there’s no BBC code available.
The link I have posted in the past of a website that would generate the BBC code has disappeared! Just have to get my non Apple desk top sorted for Flickr.
Cheers Kerrin

It's fine Kerrin - thanks.
One thing that did interest me is that some of you seem to manage to get YouTube videos to run directly within your thread, whereas mine seem to have to run on the YouTube site? How do you do that?

When I want to post something, I click the 'Reply' button at the end, and the panel that appears is BBCode. To embed a picture (and I use Flickr), I open Flickr in a separate window, select the picture I want to link, click on the curved arrow icon, when a panel appears with the link details. Copy that link, then come back to this forum and paste the link in. The picture will then appear in the post when you create it (click 'Create Post'), or you can check it by using the 'Preview' button first.

Cheers Kerrin Hi Kerrin Yes, the iPad is IOS. The reason you don’t see the BB code is that you are not signed in, and the iPad makes it seem as though you are. Flickr lets you see the pictures and share them on Twitter and FB even if you are not signed in. Sign in properly and you will see extra sharing choices, including BB. Trust me, I only use Apple these days. HTH Gary

Hi Steve & Gary, Thanks both for the tips. Taking Gary’s first, looking at my Flickr it appeared I was sign in as it had a sign out option under settings, so did that. Poor dog learnt some new computa speak while I then attempted to sign in....grrrrrrrrrr.....had to get a new temp password, any way I got back in. Then following Steve’s advice, hit create a new post, back to Flickr, select the picture, hit the curved arrow, options were save image, copy URL, set as cover photo , so I used the URL......copy, back here past, creat post...... flic.kr/p/2m1fmsDEdit......no picture appears.

Works for me - on PC, of course. Dads injector by Kerrin Galvin, on Flickr I have heard that, on Apple, if you click in the space where the BCC option ought to be, it might work. Wilf

Thanks Wilf!
Ok so bottom pipe from the left is from the side tank valve, from the right is the input from the driving trolley...dad has a syringe plunger pushed on the end of the pipe no valve. Top pipe steam from the right, delivery to the left. The three threaded fittings aren’t soldered on. As I said above I have dads spare if anybody would like dimensions let me know & I’ll pass them along.
Cheers Kerrin

No difference whether on Apple or iPad, and (I would expect) it is the same on Windows too. The options Kerrin is reporting are those that apply to guests, not to signed-in members... so Kerrin, cue more computa speak because I think you are still not properly signed in Gary

No probs Kerrin - it's all interesting!
Having problems with the new very expensive injector. It may have some muck in the cones, so will have to remove it and have a look.
My first home made one with end regulationworks better than the annular regulated one, but needs very fine water adjustment and is too fussy and requires too much attention whilst driving. I had to keep the pressure at aroung 80 psi. When the safety valves lifted at 100 psi, neither injector worked well. The bought one was supposed to work up to 120 psi.
