Hello. I am just starting the tender for my 3.1/2 " gauge County Carlow. I am using the Don Young Model Engineer series for drawings. When it gets to the tender the series feels a bit rushed, like it was written in a hurry to finish. So to my question... If there is anyone who has built this loco or has "proper plans" that can tell me the dimensions of the tender soleplate please. I just cant work it out from the ME series. Thank you in advance. John

Hello Manofkent, As an old model engineer I recall this loco being described in the Model Engineer magazine. I would suggest that you look in the library of your local society for the relevant issues and review the 'letter to the editor' pages. It collected a lot of criticism (mostly unjustified in my opinion) from the 'usual' sources who wrote in during that period. The Rev. J C Gibson's comments (he was a GWR premium apprentice) would be of interest though. My only comment would be that the boiler design was slightly unusual in as much as the proposed palm stay on the barrel would make the boiler build hard work. The conventional riveted and silver-soldered butt-strap or coppersmith's joint at the bottom of the barrel would be much simpler. Again, my opinion but I have built eight 3.1/2" and 5" gauge copper boilers over the last sixty years and lived to tell the tale. Best wishes with your build, Don Young was a reliable designer.
