Made the long journey down from near Aberdeen and visited today for the first time since it moved from Harrogate, still stayed in Harrogate though as my wife didn't fancy shopping in Doncaster. Found the traders I needed stuff from to be very busy and had to hang back a bit before I could browse much, pre ordered stuff from Model Engineers Laser so that was quite efficient, had a look upstairs at 12.30 and saw someone who I realise now with the photo above, was Reg, sorry I never made contact ☺ Ian

Always beware of people with red trousers! Roger
Best check that you returned with your beautiful shovel.
It looks as if David is about to secrete it in that empty Tango bottle

Hi Chaps.
My friend who visited Doncaster reported that the show was not as good as previous, certainly not as good as attendance at last years event with less models on display. In the end he only attended for one day rather than his usual two which seems to me indicates a drastic change of events for him not to stay and study the form.
Whats the general opinion?

I've not been before but I thought there were a large number of models and ones under construction on display, something which is sadly lacking in any quantity in the Southern shows. I understand there were less 7-1/4" models than before, according to the organisers.
I wonder whether there's a hint of Rose tinted views of the past shows. They evolve and have different emphases over time, and that might disappoint someone who's main area of interest isn't as well represented as before. I also wonder if those who criticise ever contribute to these shows by showing something on occasion?
Personally, I thought it was possibly the best show I've attended. There were traders there aplenty, with a really large area set aside for them. Some of the models were absolutely superb, the craftsmanship being first class.
The only criticism I have is the dire management of the car parking. If they got their act together and marked out parking bays rather then let people park with whatever gaps they like, they would have got another third in the space. We were told there wasn't any space left, but there were half a dozen places where I could easily park the Smart Car, which is exactly what I did.

I was surprised at the car parking arrangements too, I'd assume that on certain race days there'd be a helluva lot more punters than would go to a model engineering exhibition. I did much prefer Harrogate mysself, but a highlight for me on Saturday was just when I was thinking of leaving I spotted a lovely LNER B1 modelled as Mayflower on the Scunthorpe society stand, as I was looking closely at it, a gentleman engaged me in conversation about it, of course he was the builder but I had a great chat with this lovely chap about many things loco and engineering for about 20 minutes, highlight of my visit! Hi Roger.
It was really a comparison to last years Doncaster he said and although my friend was a historical attendee at Harrogate previous I thought there must be something slightly wrong for him to offer this opinion. He often has plenty to say and show by way of photos on his return. and usually is SMS messages and photos during the show days, not a peep this time.
He took his older son and a highlight was the fish'n chips at the end of the day:-(
Anyway not to be too negative because I have never been myself, but congratulate all those that did attended and display. Some made an epic journey by foot and by road.

Last year we went on the Saturday and I’m sure there were several car park “attendants” and the “gapping” was much better controlled etc. This year we went on Friday and arrived at about 10:15 and were amongst the last few to get a space in the main car park A. We only saw one poor attendant guy struggling to keep up with the rate of arrivals and as implied above, overall it seemed to be a very ineffective use of the space. As we walked out, you could tell that chaos had ensued!
I personally found it a great show....really good venue, easy to get to, plenty of models to look at in my own opinion, great chatting to some of the builders and staff of stands etc. Managed to obtain all the tools etc. that I had in mind beforehand, plus a few I didn’t.
Having been a member of the Grimsby & Cleethorpes MES many years ago and now living much further away, it was great to catch up with old friends again, some of whom this time I hadn’t seen for 22 years.
Highlight of the day, as talked about in earlier posts was to meet Roger and the other forum members gathered round the table at lunch time and to admire some of the bits first hand we’ve seen in all the photos here. Missed the photo call unfortunately.
Even the journey home on the M18/M1 was stress free....not bad for a Friday! Didn’t look so good for people going the other way or on the A1 though.
It’s inevitable that we all view these things differently. Personally I won’t be going to the Midlands show this year as for me the journey on any of the available routes is hellish.
Cheers Don

Hi Chaps. My friend who visited Doncaster reported that the show was not as good as previous, certainly not as good as attendance at last years event with less models on display. In the end he only attended for one day rather than his usual two which seems to me indicates a drastic change of events for him not to stay and study the form. Whats the general opinion? Hi This was the first model engineering exhibition of many over the years when I really could have done with attending a second day. Normally on a day visit I can manage to get my fill of everything necessary, with perhaps a little time to drool over the best models on show, but in fact more time seems to be used catching up with friends old and new these days. Not at all a bad thing I have to say, in fact most enjoyable.... Visiting on Friday, I thought the attendance was much the same as last year. Maybe more, as last year I got into the closest car park with spaces to spare. Note to Roger and others, best to keep in the right hand lane and pass the stationary queue, then turn right into the overflow carpark a hundred yards or so up the road. There are acres of grass and hardstanding right alongside the racecourse for the sake of another 5 minutes walk. In terms of trade outlets, my impression was that they were fewer in number than last year, likewise fewer Club stands. However I thought the exhibits were plentiful and generally of a very decent standard, some exceptional. Personal favourite from the show was the vintage (1938) petrol fired, steam powered radio-controlled tugboat on the Grimsby boat club stand. As a young chap I remember being overawed by the displays at the ME Exhibition at Seymour Hall in London back in 1968. Now that is definitely looking back through rose tinted spectacles.... Jim S

Its rather ironic that we are talking here about Model Engineering(trains in many cases) and there is much discussion on car parking arrangements,or lack of,clogged motorways and the hassles of it all.
What was it in the good old days, bicycles to the train station, a train journey and then maybe a bus to he exhibition?
You have to wonder if the world has really improved.
It's all fun.

Many thanks Jason for taking the trouble with this. A good content, nicely edited video in decent quality. Much appreciated - I have included a link from our website. All of your videos are a refreshing change from the crap quality stuff taken on mobile phones that dominates Youtube. Well done.

Many thanks from me as well. Managed to get to UK last year for this but was not going to happen this year.

Excellent piece of work. I particularly liked the brief inclusion of 'additive machining', a contrast indeed..! John
