Hi folks.
Thought some of you might be interested in the fact that I found someone who can regrind the slideways on my Senior Universal milling machine. The guy is based in Nuneaton and is charging £460 to regrind all the slideways except the vertical one on the main casting, because it didn't need doing. The original scraping is still visible. He came this morning and took a couple of hours to dismantle the machine. I wasn't able to take the machine apart due to the weight of the table, so he came down to take it apart, and will come back and rebuild it. That part is going to cost £25.00 an hour, which is half what I expected. It will mean that for around £700 I will have a machine that is as good as a new machine. The leadscrews, and nuts, are in good condition too, with very little backlash.
If someone wants their mill slideways reground, £460 is the cost if you are prepared to dismantle and ship to his workshop. He is prepared to work on any make of machine.
When it's all back up and running (quoted a week), I'll report back on the final cost and how happy I am with the work.
Bob.

I've had the X and Y slideways re-ground on the mill. Brilliant job!! It's like new now! All slideways had 'machine scrape' marks applied all over for oil retention. Cost for a Senior Major is £400.00. The M1, with a smaller table is probably a bit cheaper but he would quote you. If you wanted him to come and strip the machine, take the bits away to regrind and then come back and reassemble, he charges £25 per hour on top of the £400 for the grinding. If you strip and ship the parts, then the cost is just the £400 (I got the cost wrong when I posted above). Well worth the cost to have what is virtually a new machine. The only slideway not included in this is the vertical slideway. These rarely need doing as they don't wear. My machine was built in 1986 and still has the original scrape marks on the vertical slideway.
Matt Tweed is the guy's name. He can work on any machine, and this includes lathes and milling machines. He can be contacted on 07854622595.
If anyone is looking to fit a power drive to their machine table, he has got a couple of brand new, boxed, Align CE-500p X-axis 110v drives, for sale. They normally cost around £350 each but he is asking £150 each. Being 110v they will need a transformer but these are available from people like Chronos, for use with the Align drives they sell. I've got some photos of the boxed drives if anyone is interested.
