Hi, just a thought about your question re screws/nuts versus tapped holes in the smokebox....I don’t know what the materials are on your model but if a screw had rusted or seized and sheared off when trying to undo it, it would be a lot easier to replace a screw and nut rather than having to drill out the remains of one in a small tapped hole.
You’re doing a great job, keep it up!
Cheers Don

Thats a valid point Don! Maybe I won't drill and tap after all...

Exactly the logical answer I was looking for. Thanks for the insight.

The full-size loco has bolts fitted from the inside with nuts on the outside----- so your model will look prototypical as well !!

Hello everyone. Sorry for rather large gap since last post. Lots of degreasing and cleaning so not really glamorous work. Chassis is almost ready to receive some paint (when it arrives... still waiting for my 'friend' to bring it from the UK) But did discover something interesting along the way IMG_3456 by david follows, on Flickr I assume it was completed in 1965 by someone with Initials JST. quite pleased to find this actually. I like little bits of history. Got the cylinder covers off and pistons out etc. IMG_3443 by david follows, on Flickr actually in good condition despite what the iphone flash has made it look like. although the cylinder covers were sealed with what I can only assume was mastik of some description. I huge dollop fell out of steam passage in the cylinder after I remove the cover. discovered this insulation under the cylinder cladding. IMG_3448 by david follows, on Flickr anyone seen this material before? Should I decide to replace it, what would anyone suggest to replace it with. Desperately need my delivery of goods from Blightly to really get moving.....

Don't know, but at least it doesn't look like asbestos----.

Hi Dave
You can buy fibreglass type lagging from suppliers here in the UK. I'd have thought you should be able to find something similar over there..cork sheet might be an alternative..

Minor updates really since my last entry. took all the covers off the cylinders to see what it was like inside. Happy to say, good condition, nicely shaped ports and faces. IMG_3519 by david follows, on Flickr Slide valves dont look original to me. again all the steam chest covers etc were stuck on with mastik Someone spent a bit of time getting these ports nice and square. NTBV8024 by david follows, on Flickr Gave both cylinders a good clean up and now we're looking good LOIY3647 by david follows, on Flickr been delving into the design of the blast nozzle as well. I know theres lots written on the topic, but its interesting that LBSC appears to have discarded the 1:3 / 1:6 guidelines that I've read about. IMG_3524 by david follows, on Flickr This nozzle sits quite high in the smokebox. Someone I know is also rebuilding a PM and he's converted his to piston valves, and made a new blast nozzle that follows the 1:3/1:6 guidelines for blast nozzle design. It'll be interesting to see how the 2 machines perform on our club track. I have no plans to change mine. It worked a treat last time it ran at the club. besides all of this, it's just been more cleaning, stripping etc. have got most of the valve gear looking pretty tasty. (forgot to take photos).. Other good news is that my Gift Box from the UK arrives tomorrow. Lots of Pheonix paint, cellulose, tools etc. FINALLY. Hopefully should now progress a bit faster. cheers

Really nicely shaped ports. I wonder how the builder got them like that, too neat for a chisel, lots of filing I guess?
Nice to get a box of pressies!

Hi Tim From what I can see, they’ve been done on the mill and finished/squared off with a file. I take my hat off to original builder for the way he finished off all the fine details. Makes me want to restore it even more. Today I also received the LBSC drawings for the Princess. Compared to the ME/John Smith drawings I have for my Dart, I’m amazed at how little detail/dimensions there are.
My respect to the original builder increase weekly. I hope I can do it/him justice with my amateur hands
Cheers

They might have been horizontally "Gang-milled" using small diameter, circular cutters ??

Thought had crossed my mind as well. We’ll never know. I’m just happy they’ve been done properly. :-)

They might have been horizontally "Gang-milled" using small diameter, circular cutters ?? In that case they would be deep in the middle and shallow at the outer edges, so probably not. Possibly end milled, then a little square broach tapped in just to clean the corners out? Nicely done whatever. Stuart Turner used to (maybe still do) cast in the ports, but I don't recall coming across any castings for LBSC locos with that done.

A metal shaper could probably do those slots, or perhaps some elaborate broaching? That I guess would need a jig and lots of different sized shims..

Well, whatever method was used it certainly appears to be nicely done.......I like Princess Marina, it's a good, punchy loco that captures the Stanier LMS "look" quite well.........Didn't someone come up with a very realistic-sounding "Hooter" ????
Keep up the good work and don't forget to label and box items as you progress-------remember a re-build actually starts from the moment of first stripping !!

I agree that it captures the LMS spirit well. And they certainly are punchy and this one draws very well when being worked hard. Mine pulled 6 people without too much fuss. All the bits are in separately labelled bags with photos to show how it all came apart. Hopefully the-assembly won’t be too painful. Hopefully. ....... Really looking fwd to starting the painting/reassembly and a few minor mods I want to do.
Cheers

As for the hooter. I’ve read some good threads on here about making whistles and have downloaded a spreadsheet to help design a new one. From the results shown in the threads by Doubletop, I’m hopeful within the space constraints of a 3.5” loco i can a nice sounding whistle.
