Hi All Yes it is true, he was a bit before our time but he experimented, see www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjXBKR4iDS8This piece is known as the Choral Fantasy, rarely performed and the tunes are a little trite but dearly loved by us classical music people. He wrote this to try out various combinations of chorus and piano in a symphony which of course led to his ninth with the Ode to Joy in the fourth movement. Only 20 minutes long and worth a look at even you are into heavy metal! The real reward is the see Martha Argerich one of the worlds greatest pianists even if the hair needs attention and of course Seiji Ozawa who I first saw at UBC many years ago. A lovely and fascinating piece, see if you can hear the beginnings of the Ode to Joy in this 'experiment'? Cheers David PS the first litle bit is tuning up the orchestra to the piano, a strange custom!! Listen to the horns and they enjoyed it did they not!

What a gift, I often wonder what it must feel like to be fantastic at something! A very nice distraction from the normal course of these threads, thanks for sharing!!

Hi I agree with you, it is a wonderful piece to listen to for about 17 minutes then the vocal soloists start and the last 2 1/2 minutes the choir come in and it is short but wonderful to sing. Very uplifting.

I enjoyed that, especially the early part where I felt that they were playing in my front room, just for me! The choral part was definitely a practice piece for his greatest work. Meanwhile, for those of us who prefer younger (and prettier) musicians, here is the lovely Lola! Lots more on Youtube. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nb9YqX4iid0www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPhTVt4ZpLU

Right the gautlet is down!! Simploco, all you like in classical music is breast and brawn. yes there are some big breasted girls who can play the cello but, you have not seen the real beauty, so feast you ears on Lucia Popp, Gundula Janowiz and the rest. This is one of the most sublime quartets ever written, and I will play it for four hours on our way to Doncaster unless you submit!!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9l1wKCv9nE&list=RDA9l1wKCv9nE&start_radio=1Yours Beethovenly!

For those who watched this, the boy at the end of the sequence wants to marry the girl, who starts it off. The Dad wants the boyish (stagely at least) to be his son in law and marry his daughter, the boyish girl has become the assistant jailer trying to find her unjustly imprisoned husband who is in a dungeon below ground. Even so simple really! Yours Ludwig

Tim, Glad to see someone else talks to themselves! It got worse when our dog passed on. Answering back isn’t the issue, it’s loosing the arguments that annoys me!
Cheers Kerrin
