Hi,
I have started to attach the smokebox door and the brass hinge broke at the rivet line!
This project is one step forward, 10 back!
I have repaired it with soft solder. Will this last with all the heat in the area?
Many thanks Complex.

The temperature inside the smokebox is likely to easily exceed the safe limit for soft solder. Whether a hinge on the outside is vulnerable is a moot point.
When the door is closed with the dart and crossbar, the hinge will not be supporting any weight, so it won't fail in use - just when you open the door afterwards.
Me, I wouldn't trust it.

Agree with Wilf, I wouldn't soft solder it not only for the issue of heat but also that of strength considering the frequency of opening the smokebox door and from experience the abuse the hinges can suffer whilst cleaning the smokebox and tubes. Personally I would make new hinges and for preference in stainless steel. If you want to repair the one that broke then silver solder should be used to at least obtain pretty much the same strength as the parent metal.
Good luck

Many thanks. I think I’ll make the smokebox door again! I think I must have made several of everything!
The chassis does run like the clappers on air though. I filmed it, maybe I’ll try an upload.
Thanks again,
Complex.

Hello there, Just a thought but you haven't actually addressed the real problem and that is}---- Why did the hinge break in the first place ??..........It seems to me that there is some sort of stress showing itself.............maybe due to the sequence of build / assembly ??.... It's important to realise at this stage that the main function of the door being closed is to provide a perfect seal against air being drawn in and destroying the vacuum within.........An early indication of this will be taking a long time to light up and establishing a good fire-bed... So start by fitting the strap to the door and then loose-assemble the door onto the smokebox in it's running position................If you can incorporate a slight alignment lip that fits within the smokebox opening diameter so much the better.... Loose-assemble the hinge body onto the smokebox ring and rough-align the two items... Tighten up then drill through and fit the hinge pin making sure it's not binding.... Open and close the door several times........ it might be a wee bit sloppy when open but that doesn't matter......Close the door and check for contact all the way around.......a small feeler gauge is handy for that.............Remember absolutely NO AIR GAPS !! I hope that's of some help and inspiration ?? Alan PS}------ The golden rule of absolutely NO AIR GAPS applies equally to the fit of the smokebox ring into the smokebox shell...........and at the other end the shell over the boiler front extention............and any other openings such as the blastpipe, external steam supply pipes, etc.............You may find the use of fireclay cement helpful.....Time spent wisely at this stage will repay you later when operating your pride and joy !!

Thanks again, Complex. You might consider making the hinges from something other than Brass which is a pretty weak material. I'd hate to see it break again after going to the trouble of remaking them. There's no reason why the whole assembly can't be made from Steel if you feel so inclined. I'm not sure why Brass and Bronzes seem to be the default materials of choice for so many ME parts when Steel is so much stronger, cheaper and readily available.

Hi Roger,
Agreed ..... I think it's because in the early days suppliers were able to offer castings to beginners as a "Doesn't need too much work" way forwards.....
I still feel that there is an underlying cause for that split though..........Despite Brass being relatively weak it still should not have happened.....IMHO that is ...
here's a good case for some 3D printing !!

for me, a deciding factor is are the hinges painted or the other commonly seen burnished steel finish on the prototype, if the later then stainless steel is the way to go...

Hi,
Does anybody have a photo of the hinge pins to point me in the right direction.
Kind regards,

Many thanks. Are they silver soldered in to place?

Here's how I did it. Quick and effective. The hinge bracket and hinge straps can be shaped more if you feel the need. These are all made from stainless steel. Nothing soldered, all fastened with screws. DSCN1395 by Builder16, on Flickr

I have machined the door. All went well although surprisingly difficult to get to run reasonably true!
Still struggling with the hinges.... Tried silver soldering tube to a strap, I think I will cut it out of solid I’ll give it another go tomorrow.

Yes, my straps and "hinge tubes" are made from one solid piece. In the photo, I have not rounded or shaped anything. You can shape the tubes after to make them look more round.

I was going to upload a few photos, but I get an error message......Forum attachment limit reached You need to use an image hosting site and copy/paste the link to the image tab...click on the 'reply' tab top right to open the full reply page...you can then open the 'lmage' tab and paste the link from your chosen host there. I use Imgur for my images, there are a number of other hosting sites to choose from out there. Pete
