A couple of months back I found a screw from my lathe in the upper 'chip-tray' (I knew it was from the lathe because it had some of that tasteful yellow paint on it). I spent ages trying to figure out where it came from and every time I've used the lathe since then it has been with a little trepidation! Today while giving it a post-project clean up the mystery was solved! It came from under the saddle, as indicated by the blue arrow in the image. Now, the questions! - How can I put it back.... or rather is it easy enough to remove the saddle and put it back? Do I need any special equipment?
- What is it's purpose? (I can feel one on the right underside corner too).
I also wondered what the 'pointless' grub screws were for (red lines) but I found out (from this page myweb.tiscali.co.uk/silkstone/minilathe/minilathe01.htm) that they're just placeholders for where the the steady goes (if you've got one!) but can be used to fit a handy swarf tray!

Hi Paul, is it one of the screws holding the saddle adjusting strip? If you haven't done so already have a look at: www.mini-lathe.com/Mini_lathe/Tuning/tuning.htm#SaddleAccording to the section on adjusting the saddle you can slide it off the end of the bed without having to dismantle anything. I would have thought though that you should be able to get it back without taking the saddle off seeing as it's at the back? John

Thanks John, I suppose I might be able to get at it if I remove the rear guard/tray thing. Reading that link it looks like I'd better take it apart anyway as there is a bit of play in it. I've already completed half of step one of the suggested method anyway... "In this procedure, you remove the two end SHCS's and don't use them until the end. "
