Hi Guys Whilst having a run at the club today, one of our members had the regulator jam open, which resulted in the loco escaping down the loading bay ramp and coming to rest having hit the rear end of the owners car. Fortunately not much damage done, but the chimney was ripped off of the smokebox and the petticoat pipe bent slightly. I have been asked to put things right, but I cannot see how the petticoat pipe is fitted to the chimney. I thought it was a press fit, but it will not move on a hydraulic press. Has anyone got a copy of the drawings and could give me a clue as to how it was fitted originally. Thanks Colin

The sweet pea chimney and petticoat are just a straight pipe with the brass top and mounting flange silver soldered on. There is no flare on the petticoat

Thank you for that Andy, It confirms what I thought must be the case.

What an event?! How on earth did that come about?

The loco had not been run for a couple of years, and had just passed the hydraulic test, but failed the steam test as the axle pump was not working so the loco was being taken back to the unloading point under steam. it had travelled about 50 yards by opening and closing the regulator gently when something in the regulator stuck open and the loco ran away. When we took the regulator apart it was down to a build up of deposits around the spindle of the poppet valve and the return spring could not overcome the resistance. Lessons learnt. Unfortunately the guy who owns the loco is advancing in years and a slightly younger member was at the controls when it happened. He was mortified. Fortunately the drawings had not been followed and the chimney was held to the smokebox by copper rivets, which pulled through, instead of bolts and consequently detached without doing to much harm. Would probably have caused a lot more damage had it been bolted down

Thanks for the update. All these things provide useful lessons, so at least some good can come of a sad event
