Hi Chaps.
I have just acquired a Super Sonic Myford Super 7 need to build a metal stand for it.
Does anyone know or could measure the height from the floor to the centre of the chuck. I see photos on the Myford website but interested to know how it might differ from what I feel comfortable with.
Inches or mm are fine.
Sorry about the football😢

Hi Hayden, Sounds like you have got a nice new toy! I was told years ago that the best height for the cross slide hand wheel was your elbow to floor distance. That way your arm is in about a nice neutral position when using the lathe, oh if you use a matt then allow for that. This might be a load of rubbish but would put the lathe about right for the operator, works fine in the home shop!

Kerrin.
Thank you.
I have her sitting on a pallet on my forklift at work so can raise and lower it to get that measurement.
I think I did well. 1952 Grey, two owners, hardly any work and still with original grease in places, Dividing head and two plates, sensitive trailer stock, collets, numerous live centres, change wheels and tie holders, two chucks. All for £1000.
My mate Jimmy who is on here put me onto it. Thanking him so will see what we can make with it.

I have mine on antivibration feet which allow about 4" of adjustment. My Super 7B is about 44" from the floor to the chuck centre with about 1.5" of foot stuck out of the bottom of the stand. Its a comfortable height for me at 5' 11" tall.
Hope this helps.

I built my own stand for my Myford super 7. That way you can have it the height that you like, I bought scrounged a piece of 22mm channel steel, and mounted the lathe on that U upside down. This makes it very much more solid, and you can then level it up very well onto that channel.
best wishes

It might be quite nice to have a knee space so you can sit on a stool. I've got an ordinary base on my lathe, and standing for a long time sets my knees off. So I perch on a highish chair, but it has to be sideways.
A rubber mat on the floor is also good for avoiding leg fatigue.

I think I did well. 1952 Grey, two owners, hardly any work and still with original grease in places, Sounds ominous to me, Myford lathes should never be greased, oil only. Light oil e.g. Nuto32 applied to all the lubrication nipples/cups and a heavier oil on the slide ways. Phil

But you would grease the sliding surfaces if the lathe was to be stored - and I am sure the factory supplied them with grease on the exposed metal parts.
I fully agree that grease in the bearings is a bad plan....

Fair point Malcolm, I was only thinking in terms of normal running. Phil

Hi Hayden,
I'd put it on a bench say 850mm to 900mm tall. but your a wee shorty so maybe 800. as above, you can put it on anti vibration feet that are adjustable. too low is hard on the back after a while, :-)

Hello Hayden
Bit late to the party but if it's of any use my reconditioned Myford Super 7 on factory supplied cabinet (fitted with adjustable leveler/anti vibration feet) has a 119 cm centre height.
I am about 6ft tall and its just the right height for me.
Regards
Malcolm
PS A really bright LED lamp would be a great extra as well as Wilf's rubber mat.

I think you should choose a height that suits you. My Super 7 is bench mounted so I can get my feet under the bench if I want to stand close. Also I found the standard cabinet was too low and I got back ache bending over the lathe. I like it mounted high so that I don't have to bend. It really is just a personal choice dependant on how tall you are and how you feel comfortable. Ed
