I found these on the 'net when I was looking for photos for a post on Roger's thread. I hadn't noticed that the photos are identical............but they are NOT!!!! Bob.

Probably got the same performance as a Hornby 'Smokey Joe' on full power!

If you go into the main lobby of the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow (Glasgow Central Station hotel), you will see there are lots of wonderful black and white photographs of steam locomotives.
When you look more closely, they have (all) been doctored by some idiot designer so that they have wheels where there shouldn't be or no wheels where there should have been. Also coupling rods get cut off because the wheels they coupled to have been erased. It makes an amusing half and hour trying to spot all the goofs!

I've found researching for my class 76 to be nigh on impossible. The grills and Windows on the bodies seem to change every time I get a decent photo. Even when it's a different shot of a loco I've got pics of. I know there's two sides and luckily which side it is can be worked out by the different lengths of flat roof. But they still change those damn grills. I know when it comes to running time, I'm going to get that "oh there was only two grill on that side". My question for today is... Can I get away with using a wooden baseball bat to prove that I'm right?

Certainly you can! When it comes to court, just plead extreme provocation.

It sounds as if you have a very considerable album of photos.... Hit them with that!

Les,
From memory the body side grilles and windows never changed. Left and right side were as you say, a different layout.
I’ll see if I’ve still got a set of Gorton general arrangement drawings, just need to dig my old notes out.
As I’ve said before, “TOMMY” was a one off and different in many subtle ways. Not to be mixed up with the final build.

Les Decide which build standard of a particular loco you want model, build that including the weathering. Then when the know it all's come along you produce the photo from your phone. The know goes away deflated, saves on the court costs! Been the, there done that. I have 4mm scale Class 158 set in Ginsters livery, amazing the amount of people who say the livery never existed and I take great pleasure in correcting them. Dave

If any clever clogs criticise any uneven rivetting on Locomotion, I just show them the photos of the rivetting on the real thing. If anything mine is too neat and even.

Still waiting!

I'm just waiting for someone to criticise the colour of my Evening Star, when finished. I've got some of the actual B.R. paint from the batch made by T & R Williamson and used to repaint the loco, by Crewe Works, after coming out of storage in Brighton Works, for preservation.

T & R Williamson of Ripon? Made first class paint, if I recall. Used to go to them when decorating my house, better than that Dulux c--p!
Are they still on the go?

I bought my paint in 1969 so thought I'd better check up. Yes they are still in business in Ripon. You are right. They do make top class paint. As I said. I bought my paint in 1969 and they had been, and were still, one of the major suppliers of paint to B.R., making top quality paints. I bought a 5 litre can of the Evening star batch of B.R. Loco Green, but obviously didn't need all that for a 5" g model. I happened to be walking through the workshop, at Delapena Honing Equipment, where I was working in the D.O., and saw someone at a bench, decanting glue into 250mls tins. I thought that they would be handy to decant my 5 litres of paint into, to make it easier to handle, and to keep it from skinning over. I asked our Buyer if I could buy some of the tins for my paint. He asked how many I wanted, and when I told him, he said I could have them without charge. A couple of years later, The Cheltenham Model Engineers, had a Bring and Buy sale. I decided I didn't need 20 tins of paint, and they were taking up room in my workshop, so took 19 of them down to the club, hoping to sell them and get a bit of money back. That 5 litres was expensive. It cost me all of £3.15.0!! That was actually quite expensive when as a design draughtsman, on a good wage (for the time), I was earning just under £30 a week. Anyway, those 19 tins of authentic B.R.Loco Green, were in my possession about 5 minutes!! That got me thinking there could be a business in the supply of authentic railway colours....and that is how Precision Paints Co. was formed, in 1971, with a range of just 15 colours. I had managed to scrounge samples from Joseph Masons in Derby, T & R Williamson in Ripon, and The Science Museum in London. Those were the start of the business.

Yes I'm just getting some paint from them and at £16.20 a litre for the gloss and £9.78 a litre for the undercoat I'm hoping to be well chuffed (sorry!) with it. We use their paint on the narrow gauge locos we restore and it goes on a treat. Ian
