Hi everyone, having read all the above it appears the rigidity of the milling side of things appears to be the biggest problem. I tried a friends 3-1 machine the other week (can't remember the make but it looks similar) and as long as you don't start taking too big a cut it was ok. Anything more than .060" on mild steel with 5/8" slot drill and it got a bit of a rattle going. Which to me was ok, after all we use these machines in pursuit of our hobby, not production engineering.
