Hello All, Can some one please put me to where I can study the make up /designe of the valve gear for a single cylinder steam weir water pump fitted with a piston operated shuttle valve. My problem- does the pilot valve give steam only to operate the piston valve? The only drawing I have to my thoughts is in-correct. Thank you Albert

Hi Albert,
I've found a detailed description of the operation of the Weir pump in Model Engineer issue 840 and as you suggest, the shuttle valve only provides steam to operate the main valve. The main valve then controls the steam and exhaust for the pump cylinder. If it would help I can try and scan the article for you and send you a copy. The pages are a bit yellow (well, they are 90 years old!) so may not scan too well.
There was also an article in ME issue 2509 describing the construction of a model Weir pump.

Wasn't the AME or a similar one repeated in EIM two or three years ago?

To all who answered my request for help, thank you all very much. I have had my pump running on less than 5lbs. air pressure and drawing a good vacuum on the water side. Role on the T/E rallies so I can try it on steam. Thank you Albert.

Hello Cotswold, I had found a not very explicit drawing in M/E 3456 8 Jan. 1973.It was looking at these drawings that made me ask in this forum for advice. As I had a ready machined cyl.and ports I have to redesigned the valve layout ,used a sandwich port face- crossed the ports (valve drives the opposit cyl. to what you would expect) and direct valve drive to elimenate a rocking lever. Bye Albert.
