I was considering using a 3 way ball valve instead of trying to fabricate a steam brake valve. Has anyone used this type of ball valve for steam brake operation?

Greetings Brian, yes they are used in several commercial fittings in the UK, mainly sandwiched between PTFE "washers", but have not seen a design for amateur construction yet.
