Wow, went to order some wheel castings for my Royal Scot today. Approx £350 for a set of six! If I wasn't already sitting, I would have fallen over

Castings suppliers priced themselves out of my business a long time ago

You should worry, I was quoted £1400 for six. EN8 blanks were £120 for six! ok so there was a bit of swarf making involved. and we are talking disc wheels not spoked but even so £230 for a cast iron disc.

As an alternative, try making a pattern and get castings made from it. There's a foundry in Pyle (just outside the M25 near Heathrow, so not that far from Reading) called Wagstaffs and they cast 4 wheels from my own pattern at £15 each about 3 years ago. These were 7" diameter with 8 spokes for a narrow gauge loco. Not quite as complex a pattern as for a Scot of course! They have a flashy website (http://www.wagstafffoundries.com/) but were quite happy for me to wander around the works and chat to anybody while they weren't pouring. A fascinating place!

Hmm, nice suggestion jgb, but at this stage beyond my capabilities and time frames. I may try and find a reason to visit the foundry though.
Ta for the feedback.
