Yesterday I visited the Engineering in Miniature site, if for no other reason than to see if they were still publishing. Some years ago I had dropped my subs to both ME and EiM because I was running out of paper space and hadn't seen an EiM since. What caught my eye was an announcement of a serial, beginning next month, for a 3.5"ga SCHOOLS class project by Nick Feast. Can anyone shed any light on what level of model engineering this project will be? A "class" project implies it might in some way be a simplified version, something less challenging that the RODEAN, but perhaps not. I'd be very interested to know.

Doesn't that mean a 'Schools class' locomotive, like the 'Lord Nelson class', 'S15 class', 'Merchant Navy class' etc. Basically used to describe all members of that class of design.
Not often you get a new serial build these days and the Schools class is a good looking design.
Regards,
Dan

Normally yes, of course it would refer to a SCHOOLS Class locomotive, but the way it appeared in the notice made me think in this case "class" might mean something else. Perhaps not.

Yep, it is a 'Schools Class' model; i.e. the Southern Railway Class V. It is described as 'an improved model' (Quote Engineering in Miniature magazine, Jan 2023 p45) , and Nick Feast (in my opinion) models to a high standard. Thus I anticipate a model to modern standards compared to the now quite elderly LBSC design.
Matters may be a little clearer from 19th January when the magazine becomes available in UK.

Thanks Phil, and good news IMHO, especially the modern standards bit. This may entice me to re-subscribe.

The following excerpts from the introductory article which largely focuses on the prototype in Engineering in Miniature magazine, February 2023, page 17, may give an indication of the scope of the build series.
Background:
Nick Feast has bought a part-built 'Roedean', Schools Class loco, to LBSC's design.
"The LBSC drawings for an authentic piston-valve version and the detailed building notes were included in the sale, along with a set of drawings for the slide-valve version, originally sold by Clarkson's of York dating from around 1935.
"The LBSC series was published in English Mechanics [magazine] in 1949/50 and was reprinted without updating in Model Engineer [magazine] in 2011/12. having built a few locomotives I combined what I thought were the best elements of each design and added a few of my own, which I will describe in detail in the next articles"
"Next Month [March]: Nick starts his project by analysing what he has bought and what he needs ....."
