I Have a Warco minor Mill/Drill, and for more years than i care to remember, had photcopies of an article from the ME that gave good mods for it. I have put the spring on the quill to minimise backlash. made the clamping levers to replace the two nuts, and increased the length of the 'clamping screws' for the bottom slide. One bit i didnt get round to was the plate that he put on the column in order to get the vice square.
Guess What.. cant find the photocopies!!! On looking through the ME list there appear to be two articles that might cover this They are Iss 3953 p334 and iss 4014 p 392, could someone email them to me please? or at a minimum give the dimensions of the plate
Thanks
PS i have nearly filed the black steel (all 39 inches of it) to a flat datum line.... now to do the other side!!!

The vol 3953 article refers to the spring and locking screws so that may be the one. No dimensions for a 'plate' just:- "A problem encountered when using this machine is that radial position is lost when the head is raised or lowered. I overcame this by fitting a metal strip with thumbscrews to the bottom of the belt guard and curving it to fit around the column. Using a key seat rule, I scribed a vertical line along the column itself so that when the head is moved, all that is necessary for realignment is to ensure the mark on the metal strip matches up with the line marked on the column."
Is that the bit you meant?
Cheers, Andy

No,
This one had a plate that was fixed to the column using the bolt holes where the flexible cover is also attached. Makes it a lot easier lining up the vice. Apparently there is a small piece of the column that is parallel to the bed and if a plate was put thee, (6" x6")? then you can vernier or dti the vice against it. Thanks for the input. that idea wasn't in the article i saw

whats wrong with a mag stand on the column and a dti for clocking the vice? Once you've done it drill through the vice base in line with the edge of slots and insert some metal dowels. Next time you need to alinge your vice place on table, push dowels against slot edge and bolt it down.

I read an article somewhere (on line I think) that suggested maching a slot in the base of my vice and then fitting a bar which then fits into one of the slots in the bed. It really didn't take that long to do.
I think this will give the same result you are after and is pretty close to Mutley's solution.
I can post some pictures tonight if that will help ?
