Im just about to put my 3.5 inch lilla cylinders together for the last time, in ross harrisons articles he recomends gold size to seal the faces of the port block and cylinder together has anyone any better suggestions?

There is quite a choice, brown paper, proper gasket paper available in various thickness and liquid gasket, all have their followers. I will admit to liking brown paper gaskets. I have heard of gold size being used but not in a model engineering context.

I've used brown paper gaskets soaked in oil successfully on stationary engines and proper gasket paper on my larger models without any problems which usually arise when you try to remove the cover plates.

You might consider, if you haven't already done so, putting a couple of tapped holes in each cover, for jacking screws. Makes getting the covers off so much easier if you've used any form of jointing that sets.

I wouldn't use gold size. If you do, depending on the manufacturer's makeup of the gold size, if you want to take it all apart in the future, you may have difficulty actually getting the faces to separate. The general method of sealing flat faces, on cylinders, is as suggested above by Jim and millman, brown paper soaked in oil, or use proper gasket paper. Then you won't have problems dismantling, and the seals will work well.

Gaskets every time as these give you a sharp blade lead in area. They can take up any rough areas. Also prevent cast iron to cast iron rusting together which is difficult to part in the future.
Stainless steel studding is also a great idea.
Best regards

At Didcot in the 80s, we often used gasket sheet and graphite grease. The original gaskets could be a right cow to clean off but never had problems with the gasket and graphite grease.
