Hello Clive, thanks for your comment. I think that the stability of the worldwide definition of "carbon neutral" offers a great perspective for steam technology and all technologies with external combustion. |

When wood is fired, this is regarded as carbon neutral because while growing the tree has consumed the same amount of CO2 that is set free when the tree is burned.
When the tree was pressed and became oil during a long time in between, this is not regarded as carbon neutral, perhaps because of the much longer time in between.
So firing oil is "bad" and firing wood is "good". That makes the big advantage for steam locos over diesel locos: Wood can be fired in steam locos but not in diesel locos.

if wood is good for firing steam locos, why are we being told that our wood burning stoves are bad?

It is for people capable to develop a working vision for the future.

I leave that sort of thing to my elected representatives, the government of the day. Doesn’t mean to say that I agree or disagree with what they do.
