At the model club this morning was a member exercising his little Mamod Brunel Engine. and was struggling to top up the gas cylinder from a disposable Propaine/Butane can via the supplied adaptor. His problem, silly boy, was the can had been topped up (repeatedly) from another can using some nefarious methods. The result was he'd compromised the valve and the little tit on the end of the filling adaptor was no longer long enough to break the gas can seal and trigger the top-up. Part of our exchange was him complaining at the replacement cost of the adaptor and that it was now routine to loose loads of gas on every top up. Examining the adaptor it was noted that critcal little 'O' ring had been plained down by, I guess, repeated disassembly/reassembly. On further examination we noted that there was a very sharp edge on the screw-on retaining nut where the 'O' ring sat and was chafing the ring badly. It needed a chamfer to ease the ring entry. So, my question: Anyone know what the thread is on these disposable gas cans? I have a gas blow lamp that uses the same cans and would like to bank the thread information, just in case. I measure it as 10.6mm but can't quite get the thread pitch.

7/16" x 28 UNEF on the canister to take the Lindal B188 valve Thanks. After a lot of asking my question in different ways I finally go to a Wiki page that told me the things conform to EN417 and the thread detail as above. Couldn't find a 7/16" UNEF tap the Tacy Tools site but did find one elsewhere. Just to add a little context, these fittings are used in the real steam gauge 0/1 world to recharge the gas tank and are not cheap to buy.

Just Googled 7/16 x 28 UNEF tap and there are quite a few available for under £15, one well known supplier was Rotagrip eBay shop.

Thanks, I missed that. The "However" being they're using a similar pricing scheme to their Schrader valve taps.

Hi I experimented some time ago and made my own tap. Screw cut 28 tpi on some 7/16'' silver steel. Cut 3 flutes with a ball nose end mill. Harden in the usual way. Sorry no pictures. The tap worked well in aluminium and brass. Cheers Rich
