I am trying to test a Speedy boiler made by Chelston Model Engineering from Torquay. The test certificate is dated 1988. It looks as if the company no longer exists. Has anyone any experience of their products? The workmanship on the boiler is poor to say the least.

No experience of the company’s products but seem to remember seeing their adverts in Model Engineer magazine throughout the eighties, I believe they also sold a few casting sets for stationary engines, I would imagine it was a one man business ran possibly from home.

Yes they did castings for the Jowitt poppet valve engine in a couple of sizes, had a CME logo on the cylinder end cover.

The boiler I'm dealing with is No 3088. It's such a rough job it looks looks more amateur than professional. It's to the original LBSC design complete with brazed joints on the boiler shell but whoever built it couldn't get five tubes in the bottom row, but had drilled the holes, so only three are fitted with the others blanked off. The silver soldered joints are also rough with inconsistent penetration and there are a few leaks although it's never been steamed, having been in store for years, but the makers issued a test cert at 120 psi. On the positive side the firehole door is a nice job! I wouldn't have put my name to it. It may end up as an exhibit as to how not to build a boiler.
