Hello all,
I’m currently threatening the idea of building the Ffestiniog’s LINDA from the drawings of CHARLES; available from Blackgates. Does anyone on here have experience with building one or of the drawings themselves?

Is this the one that was written up ln Engineering in Miniature many years ago, or am I getting confused with something else.

Hi Millman, I'm not too sure. However i've just been on the phone to Jacqui at Blackgates to order the drawings and she said to me that Ross Harrison did the 3 1/2 inch version and Sid Bennett the 7 1/4 ones.
So it could very likely have been the same engine in EIM, I believe the drawings were published in the catalogue around 2013?

Ross Harrison's 3.5"g design in EIM was for Lilla not Linda.
Interesting project though..

I have built one, it is a big loco for 3 1/2 inch gauge , it is a two man lift. The drawings are quite good, all the valve gear is correct, The cab is a little wrong, but you will notice that against a picture of the full size, depending on what era you build it too. you can make the outer rods look better than the drgs, as they have simplified a lot , depends how far you want to go. I also got southern boilers to make my boiler as i wanted a more scale backhead. Model engineers laser do all the laser cut parts . frames etc, any questions just message me and ill try and answer them. Garry

This years Narrow Gauge event at the Rugby Club CV22 5QD had one running superbly. We have a Don Young Hunslet in the works so do not have any more time to build one unfortunately. Jacquie and Phil are very helpful and were both at the event.

So, after a chat with Jacqui I’ve had the drawings for a couple of days to gloss over, I didn’t realise just how big Charles is!
As I’m going to be building LINDA I’ve decided to start with a tender, of which the drawings don’t include one however I’ve been busy sketching up my own.
I’m aware that MEL supply a quick build contractors type tender for use behind CHARLES, however I’m going to attempt to make mine look a little more prototypical with the wide side ‘overhang’ that’s seen in both ‘the ladies’ tenders.
I’ve been in contact with Ed regarding the tender; and he’s kindly adjusted the frames on his design to make it appear more Linda-like. Once I’ve put some proper dimensions in for the tender I’ll be in contact with him once again to have the body and frames cut to dimension.
