I've been having trouble with one of my digital calipers. The battery it came new with ran out and I replaced it with a new LR44, but that didn't last very long at all. do these calipers normally require SR44 silver oxide batteires? My other caliper seems happy enough with an LR44.

In my calipers the SR44 seem to last about twice as long as the LR44 but they cost about five times as much. You pay your money and take your choice!
The two types do have different shaped discharge curves so the lifetime comparison will depend on the minimum working voltage of your calipers.
Russell.

These batteries are also very much 'you get what you pay for' I bought a card of 20 or so in the Pound shop but they don't last long [did I hear 'typical Scotsman' in the background ] however if you don't mind changing them regularly it's a lot cheaper. I wouldn't be surprised if some local traders are splitting up these Pound shop cards and selling them individually at a huge profit! Ron

A simple solution. Throw the used battery into the dustbin. Immediately follow this with the digital caliper itself. Then go and buy a non-digital caliper with a dial readout. They are accurate to 0.001" or less, and the batteries never let you down because there aren't any.

You're on the wrong forum Eightpot, Blasphemous words criticizing the great god digital, my Handraulic Mitutoyo suffers from the same deficiency as yours, never runs down. Regards Ian.

Nobody wants them I think. :'(or is it ;D I got them because my digital let me down one day at the most inconvenient time and I had no spare.

Bit off subject here but we started a lad just out of his 4 year apprenticeship with another company and he could'nt read a vernier scale because he'd used digital equipment right through ! What is the world coming to ?

If you make a dummy cell with leads to a battery box containing a couple of U2's or D cells it would last for years, better still a mains adapter?

I'm cheap, errrrr, financially challenged, hence I buy the $2 shop cards. There are 10 ag13's on it,which will last me a year or so. One SR44 is about $8,so even if it lasts a year,I'm still winning . Btw.,I've noticed that when the battery starts to run down, the display doesn't switch off after 10 min. anymore.Good indicator for battery life.

Ive got a few verniers layed out in the different parts of the shed (or is that lost and cant be relocated when needed)..
A cheapo digial vernier and also a mitutoya digital brand, over the years I think ive gone through about 4 batterys on the cheapo, but the mitutoya runs for a couple of years (Im not in the shed every night, so its not constant use)in fact I cant remember when I changed the battery last .
Obviously in my case there is a extremely different power usage between the two..

Thank you to everyone for comments and advice. I've fitted a new (LR44) battery purchased from Boots to my 8" calipers today without touching it, and I'll see how long it lasts!
I also spent an hour or so resurrecting my old Mitutoya 4" dial calipers as a fallback!
