Made it today with 2 hours each way dodging motorcycles on the A65/59 so the views of a show virgin will now be foisted upon you. Brilliant! Chatted to Keith (Richmond) and must agree with Wayne on the job he's done on the Super 7 - ah well, maybe one day. Got everything on my list, and a few more bits 'just in case' ;D, generally very impressed with the trade stands, far less secondhand junk than I expected. No Perfecto change wheels though The model hall got quite oppressive as the afternoon came on - frozen wastes indeed! but there was plenty there. As one quite focussed on steam, preferably on rails, I probably skimmed the boats too quickly but the model that sticks in my mind is the big single in the background of Laurie's third photo above - there is something quite majestic about the singles. Managed to get a good look at a couple of Rob Roys to see where mine is different - not wrong you understand, just different. Even found the SMEE spark eroder and showed them where they went wrong , seriously that was a really good demonstration of a neat and simple device, identical in concept to mine (that might be back to front) but much more neatly executed.

Went on Friday - keep going to these things on the Friday thinking I will avoid the crowds - forgetting the age profile means most others do the same - quieter on Saturday I understand - will try that next time. Met Waggy and Boadicea - complimented her on the roundness of her petite rump, not sure about Waggy's (not together, by the way). Also met the chaps from my own club - Northampton. I realise now I must have talked to Keith with his lathe, but did not realise it was him - must be my age! A great day out - arrived early to find it was 10.00 not 09.00 as it said on the ticket - discovered the golf club hole 19 for coffee and excellent bar which I used again later. Going to make it my only exhibition - so much better than the others and there just seems to be more "real people" there to strike up a conversation with. Managed a few small bargains to recover the admission fee. A good range of models - why is it someone always says afterwards "Did you see...." - and you missed it! I got the impression the action outside was less than last year - fewer traction engines I think. I did not go there to drink but it is time to have a decent beer tent with Black Sheep or Tim Taylor's (no need for both)! You can't beat co-ordination - being in the area I went to the NYMR. It was a DIESEL weekend. You know - big hulks of metal that make more noise and more smoke than a steam loco and can just about pull your hat off on the flat! Thankfully, one of them failed anyway. However, I did see the Q6 (nearly a Netta) outside the shed.

I was at the show Friday (very, very busy) and Sunday (very busy) on our stand, The City of Oxford S.M.E which proudly won the best Club stand award.
Met up with Keith (Richmond) on Sunday so I at least have one face to a name.
As usual spend too much money including buying a new Warco GH 1330 lathe but hey you only live once, (anyone want a Harrison L5).
A real big thank you to all that we met at the show weather organisers or visitors. It was a superb weekend, well worth the 200 mile trip.

Made notes of whom to see and where on Saturday, then forgot to take them. Doh! Anyroad, first hall to call in was the tooling, wandered round, stopping at various stalls to explain to SWMBO what various bits of tooling did and how they were used, and yes, she DOES have a genuine interest. Dragged her quickly past one stall cos I didn't want to get into an argument about a display, "Oh yes" she says,"DRO's" (Smart a**e clever B***h) One guy near us smiled knowingly, wonder if he's been on this site? On Station Road Steams stand, one of the reps was trying to sell her a 5" gauge loco and tender to "Go on the sideboard" told him that A. we didn't have a sideboard, and B. The display we do have comprises lots of big lumps of Austrian crystal. It amused him that one forum member is waiting for his fish to die so he can use tank as a glass display cover for HIS toy train. One model for sale of a twin oscillator and boiler on the stand promoted a lot of brain racking, I could explain which modelmag it was in, who designed and described its construction and the boat it was for, but could I 'ell as like remember the plants name. If SRS are reading this, the plant is/was "Miranda" by Basil Hartley. Nother stand we stopped at Caused Swmbo to explain why she didn't like the modern outline loco's they were displaying and was horrified that people could contemplate buying a "FINISHED" loco! Told the lads at Abbots that I'd hit her later. Looked on the MYFORD stand and compared the prices of QCTP's with those on the CHRONOS stand next door! Oh dear, the Chinese and Indians are REALLY shafting the tooling industry, you'd better grab bits quick, cos when our economy goes mammeries up, like it will do, despite reassuring noises from darn sarf ------- . One thing we did need to get was "A pair of pliers for my kitchen toolkit" Staved the purchase off cos we'd have to carry them around, so we proceeded into hall 2, club stands etc. After looking at a couple of stands, one of us had to sit down for a while.Don't know why it is that no matter what the weather is like, it's ALWAYS too hot inside, must be all the hot air being generated. So I then had free rein to go and upset people on my own. The intention was to visit one of the toy boat stands where I knew a display of marine steam engines had been assembled by a member of another forum, later I wanted to meet a guy who has made and described various types of model engines on an American site. Got to said stand and while waiting to ask the stand rep who was talking to someone else, where the person responsible for the marine engines was, overheard their conversation, part of which was a repeat of something I'd read on site at 5.30AM that morning. After introductions I'd killed two birds with one stone, never met either before but like hail fellow, well met. Wandered further round cos I knew someone famed for his insults to us good Yorkshire folk was hiding on the Hull stand. Listened to some guy rabbiting on about a power cross feed on a Myford to a chap with a camera, Locked onto the conversation and it became apparent that the duo were Richmond and Wayne. Introduced myself but didn't stay long cos I didn't want to be caught in the bang. - some one must have disarmed it Keith, I'll get you next time. Collected Swmbo and went back to the car for sarnies and a drink, ( If the profits went to the various model societies OK, but it don't, so I'm not greasing the pockets of the HYS owners) Went back down for another couple of hours trudge round on my own, met another two chaps from the Yankee site, one of whom I'd posted to Modeng (John) about, displaying CNC machinery. Now if we had disagreements about DRO's, CNC is going to be a whole new ballgame. Looked in at the stand with the HRD Meteor engine, De Havilland Goblin and 3 1/2 litre Bentley engine (That drew one or two round when he ran it) I know it's only a model, but it must be the full size design that gives it its base growl. Eventually trudged back to car Kn***ered, good day out, Best regards to those I met also to those I didn't, might get you next year, and Oh yes, forgot to take the bl**dy camera as well!!! Regards Ian. PS. Got out of hall and had to go back in again, Swmbo's pliers. (Brownie points galore)

he advertises on the home workshop website. This is his ad on there: Home workshop machine moving service, I can supply transit flatbed vehicle with crane and transport machines like Harrison, Colchester, Boxford Milling machines and Lathes, Wadkin, Sedgwick, Starrett woodworking machines, table and bandsaws and other items like engines, steam engines, workshop to workshop including getting them inside and on the floor using medium size vehicle so I can get down ten foots and driveways, it is not much bigger then a large estate car but can lift and transport 1200kg. Most items will be collected and delivered the same day depending on mileage and time by an experienced machine mover/machine repair engineer that has a good working knowledge of the machinery. Part/shared loads and half days are sometimes available depending on the daily schedule. This is a one to one service and I pride myself in doing a friendly and safe service. I have public and product liability insurance including goods in transit for piece of mind and only use new/certificated lifting equipment. Moblie 07787 378 668 Many Thanks

Kevin is a mate of mine, and provides an excellent service. He is also thinking of doing some small amount of machine dealing, mainly spares, and at realistic prices in comparison to some "dealers".
Well worth a chat to if you need something moving.
