Gland packing!
I am just a little confused about gland packing the plans i have lack a great about of detail. Do you simply wind a bit around the valve rod then tighten the gland nut until it is smoth but steam tight or is there a special say this is done.
Also the gland nut......should it have a flat surface or a conical shape turned into the back of the nut?

Hi Ian In the industrial world gland packing was usually fitted a turn or two at a time, in model engines I've tried it that way and one continuous length and both seem to work equally well, the important thing is not to nip it up too tight as this absorbs a lot of the power, if anything err on the slack side till it beds in. I normally do a flat back to the gland nut, I've never tried a conical one as the flat one works OK. Ron

Yep, use a flat face on the gland nut. Also, the good ol' teflon-tape-twisted-into-a-string trick is far superior to most conventional packings. Much less friction AND you can get it anywhere.

I have given up with it for G1sized glands and pistons , the difficulty I was having to get enough in place was giving me blood pressure so I now use viton o'rings , not so size tolerant as packing but better for my health.

By teflon tape do you mean plumbers tape like on taps etc
I can feel a jet of air coming from the gland so i need to put something there. After fitting the gasket the engine ran way better.
So close to running on the track i can feel it!

Thanks Tel and everyone for their input.
Started the clyinders for the other side last night.
Amazing how quickly you can get something done once you know how to do it.
Packed the working cylinder last night but it is tight.....More fiddeling required...
