Hi. I am at a stage when I am making the footplates that run along the side of this loco, drawings not clear as to how close a fit they should be to the boiler lagging. Any ideas? Other pictures seen at various times seem to miss this area out. Mine is not a Modelworks kit version by the way. Stan.

Hi Stan, This picture www.britanniabuilder.co.uk/GCR0508/pic12.jpg which I took of 70013 on its first public outing on 3 May shows that there's a small upturn on the inner edge of the footplate and the top edge of this seems to be pretty close to the smokebox and cladding. It also seems to extend back in front of the top feed delivery pipe. I've never seen this reproduced on a model, though! Regards, John

Thanks Plod and John.
John, your picture shows a bit more of what I am looking for. There seems to be a fair gap between the footplate and boiler lagging so that answers my question really. As to the up-turn along the back edge, well I suppose it would add some strength to the metalwork, but then it would cause more work etc.
many thanks both. Stan.

Hi I put the "upturn" on these running boards by using thin brass angle soldered/rivetted under the running board with the upturn showing by approx 1/8". Between this upturn and the boiler cladding runs the 3/16" pipe from the clacks. Forweard of this pipe the upturn runs very close to the cladding and smokebox. Paul.

Yes Paul, that is one way to skin the cat. I did think I would not bother but having now cut the slot for the reverser and noticed how much the plate that side is likely to twist I will probably go along the line of a piece of brass angle. Next thing is trying to dechyper where the brackets are placed. Sorry to say I feel the Perrier drgs do leave too much to the imagination. I expect I will survive, after all I am not going for a rivet counters delight! I'm the guy that is trying to finish off something started in Ontario and having given it a false identity the odd difference will not bother me. Stan.
