G'day all.
I am considering building a model of the Levant Engine.
The reason is that about a mile from my home (Hallett Cove South Australia) is an old engine house which industrial archaeologists think housed an engine like that at Levant. We know the engine was built by Harvey of Hayle and had a 22" cylinder. It arrived on the site about 1844-45 but only stayed there a few years before being relocated to the Bremmer Mine in the Adelaide hills; there is an old photo of the Bremmer Mine which shows the flywheel and outer end of the beam. The original housing had the entire engine indoors in a house much like that at Levant.
I would like to build the model to display locally. Although the engine house and chimney are the oldest buildings in the entire council area and about the earliest engine house in the State, nobody seems interested, particularly the local council.
Questions:
I think the UK National Trust sell plans of the engine, how do you get them?
Does anyone know of an existing model of the engine?
Have plans for a model ever been produced?
Are there castings?
When in the UK in 2000 I dragged SWMBC along to Levant; the site was open but the engine was stripped down and you couldn't see much. It was a very foggy afternoon and I was concerned that the road would come to an end at a cliff. However the sun shone over the beach at St Ives and I saw an English summer holiday scene, very charming.
Regards (finally)
Ian
