I have just applied PQ31 Etch primer mixed with equal quantities of PQ32 Activater Thinners as directed. I am only painting the Minnie Traction Engine so am applying this by brush. My concern is that it appears to be so thin almost transparent that I can still see the base metal after appying the primer. Please can any one advise that has used this before is this ok is this to be the expected result as the base primer was thinned 50/50, im a little concerned

I think you have done it right.
If you applied it correctly it is translucent. It provides something for the next layer to grip onto. Not a good Idea to build it up too thick. You will probably need to apply standard primer on top.

Hi Can't comment on the Phoenix etch primer but I have experience of spraying automotive 2 Pack etch and it is very thin and watery and as Julia says needs a coat of ordinary primer on top. Basically etch does as it says, etches into the metal to give a key for the subsequent coats so it doesn't need to be thick. Ron

Hi Awins,
The most important thing is to test the results to see if it has really bonded to the metal.
You should not be able to scratch it off with a finger nail (or a bic biro bit of plastic is a slightly tougher test). Then try a test piece with etch primer and other paint on top. Test to see that it is all working correctly BEFORE you go on to paint your model!!
If you are still worried about etch primer, you might like a copy of my book (sorry about the advert everybody (see trade section of this site)) where I go into etch primer in some depth, especially having had a lot of trouble with it.
Cheers Chris.
