Hi Everybody Anyone with experience of such things got any comments on the 'new' regulator design which featured in the May edition of EIM. I'm shortly going to be making the regulator for Simplex and it seems a lot simpler than a lot of designs I've seen but I haven't had much experience of either making or using regulators. Ron

Hi Ron,
I haven't seen it as I don't take EIM. What's the idea behind the new design?

Why bother, use a SS ball valve we use them in all the locos we have built /are building and they are the dogs ........ Look in the archive for the previous discussion on this subject.

Some confusion over these valves and the various 'qualitys', ie which type are best for the job. Any further details and where the can be obtained please. Stantheman.

Bit too big for 2½" Gauge

Hi John Basically it seems to be based on the idea of a safety valve but instead of the steam pressure lifting the ball off the seat it is done via a rod from a cam, actuated by the regulator. It seems like a very simple design compared to some of the 'Heath Robinsons' I've seen and it's quite economical in materials [ie of got enough stuff to make one!]. Let me know and I'll send you a scan if you want. Ron

Bit too big for 2½" Gauge I know that our club matelots have a lot of trouble with both free movement (or lack of it) and also progressive control in regulators for radio controlled steam boats. A couple of them seem to think that a scaled down version might be worth trying.

It certainly looks relatively easy to make.....
I only drive 2 locos regularly, our club Achilles has a slide valve type regulator which is a bit all or nothing, notchy and generally not very nice. The Speedy which is a simple screw down regulator (1/4" Whit I believe) is an absolute joy, light touch, progressive - just nice to use. Both built to drawing as far as I am aware, I know what is going in Rob Roy!

I've just studied the design (thanks for the scan Ron . One possible problem I can forsee is that it could stick open if it gets scaled up due to using ordinary tap water (which a lot of owners do). There is no positive means of reseating the ball - it relies on the spring pressure and the steam pressure to do that. Perhaps an unjustified criticism but just my thoughts. It's also far more complicated to make than the simple screw down type which usually work perfectly if carefully made. John
